bray.rebecca [at] gmail [dot] com I'm Rebecca Bray and this is my graduate thesis project for the Interactive Telecommunications Program at NYU. More information about this project will be available on this site soon. Plantopia is a plan for a museum based on a museum design manifesto I've developed as a way to clarify my ideas about what makes for good interaction design. The Museum Design Manifesto describes the elements that I believe go into creating a good museum experience. It was developed from notes taken during my visits to many New York City-based museums during my Cabinets of Wonder class at ITP. I have never been a museum professional, and do not claim to know all of the aspects of making an excellent museum or exhibit. However, this exercise helps clarify for myself how my background and education can be applied in a museum setting. The Plantopia Museum Plan describes and proposes an interactive new media traveling museum about plants. The plan explains the physical layout, exhibits and learning experience of the museum while referencing the manifesto. On a broader level, this project explores creative ways to educate a broad range of people about environmental issues. It examines ways that museums and other educational institutions can draw from innovations in creative technology to create meaningful, narrative experiences that educate and inspire. The Museum Design Manifesto The manifesto is based on research as well as reflections on my own experiences. Certainly visits to museums come into play, but I also draw upon time spent as audience member and participant in various kinds of events. Many of the points come from notes I have written while visiting museums such as the Monterey Bay Aquarium, the Exploratorium, the NY Hall of Science, the American Museum of Natural History, and others. This manifesto serves as a list of guidelines for myself about what I should consider before creating any interactive experience. I also hope that it can be helpful to others who are devoted to creating interaction design in educational contexts. Please contact me for more information about the manifesto.
