A conversation about gratitude, being where you are, and choice
Original post by Paris Marashi on This Iranian American Life

What is gratitude? When do you know to be grateful for where you are?
When do you know that even though you can be where you are, you can choose something else?
This is a conversation in Tehran between my sister and a friend about gratitude and choice.
This video is eight minutes long…So please save this video for when you have time to listen to this very sweet philosophical discussion.

Liverpool Origami Workshop

Liverpudlians, come for an origami workshop at the TAO Antique Shop. 6pm. 102 Seel Street - The Living Gallery and TAO HQ. Click the URL below to see a map. I will probably start with a classic fish, move to the ubiquitous crane, and if you are up for it, we can go for the blow-up frog. Free origami paper, or bring your own. I will also give a brief discussion on how origami meets NASA engineering, zen understandings of organism cell division, and of course, relate the entire thing to ‘new media arts’. Be there or be square [folded into a water bomb base]

selling flowers in the streets
Original post by Paris Marashi on This Iranian American Life

Translation______________________
My mom:
what? where? Bah! what flowers!
Sir how much are these flowers?
Please don’t throw them in the car!*
Vendor:
1000 tomans per bunch.
how many would you like?
Mom:
1000 tomans per bunch? It has 5 in each? Tell him to bring one for me! Sir please come here! Sir! Tell him we want the good ones.
Me:
Sir! we would like one please! The good ones please!
My sister:
Thank you. Here you go sir [handing him the money]. Thank you. Goodbye.
[handing flowers to my mom]
Bah bah. [this is a sound used to express if something looks, sounds, smells or tastes good]

*Note
This has happened to my mom before, so perhaps she was taking preventative measures. Once a guy was selling walnuts in the street and saw we were interested. He put the bag of walnuts in the car, and the traffic light changed color before we had a chance to pay him. We had to turn back around and find him and give him the money! Our family was very disappointed in us for arriving so late

October dawned as a surprise. I was walking across MacDougal and there in the middle of the street was a perfectly placed maple leaf, reddened by the falling season. Until that moment I had been living not only in summer, but in August. In the street, a sign. The leaf had blown solely south a block. There were no others. Autumn. From that point on the days got colder. The very next day it seemed the pathways in the park will filled with the clutter of those who had not escaped. Looking back I should have picked up that one leaf.
My schedule is beginning to settle into constant requirements. I don’t know as I will ever be ahead, the steady level of productivity is at once a burden and the best it could possibly be. As ever I have taken on a mountain and in the coming weeks I will continue to climb, we all know you can’t fall off a mountain.
This week was especially good as I was hired on the spot at Rugby, which is a small branch of Ralph Lauren. The best way I can describe it is modern distressed preppy. Whereas A&F was a casual luxury, Rugby is luxury casual. I probably won’t be rocking the Bow tie to work, but I could. The greatest part of this opportunity is that I now can walk the five blocks to work. I start next week, so it is too early to presume.
That same day I was further enlightened by finding $80 on the sidewalk.

I have realized that setting up a wiki is not the best idea ever. Since I set that up, I felt kind of divided between there and here. This is truely effecting my documentary abilities(hah) overall. Since the human(that’sme) is hesitant in his nature, putting on different options is not the best thing sometimes. I [...]
