Geezer-Dingbat vs. Obama-Biden
I was personally offended by McCain’s choice of Sarah Palin. She strikes me as the worst kind of token. In feminist literature there is the notion that mainstream society believes that only when a woman has proved herself as a sexual object (beauty queen) and a wife and mother, can she be taken seriously in power circles of the male-dominated society. And then only in narrowly-defined roles. Palin strikes me as this kind of token woman - one that would appeal to John McCain’s generational mind-set. Some of the talking heads in the media have compared her to Dan Quayle, but to do so really does a disservice to Dan Quayle, who had more than 10 years’ experience in the House and Senate before becoming George the First’s VP.
I leave today. Yes, TODAY!
I’m waaaay over-packing. I keep taking things out of my suitcases, and then putting them back in.
Help me edit what’s currently in my suitcases.
I’m really tempted to add my fabulous Royal Elastic walking shoes, but they would really be overkill in the shoe department. There is a fifth blazer that have packed and unpacked a couple of times. I’m not taking it.
I’m going to miss my babies. Shenid has promised to SKYPE them to me!

Photograph taken by Raphael Martin
I learned about the process of rolling and annealing (def: reducing stress within metal by heating to a prescribed temperature).
Whenever you want to melt scraps, you use a higher temperature. However in annealing, you want to use a “feather flame” (please see diagram below), and when the medal reaches a certain glow, you cool it and pickle it. After the pickling process, the metal has to be completely dry and free from oxidation, you roll it.
Most designs either require a flat shape or cylindrical shape in order to form wire. Always roll in one direction, and about five times. If you’re working with purer or softer metals, you can stretch it a little. Find the “dead pass” (just a little resistance), and adjust metal through teeth of the rolling machine. In keeping the electrons even within the metal, you have to be mindful of rolling in one direction. Watch out for cracks, but don’t confuse them with air bubbles.

Three years after the storm

Today marks the three year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. Rather then dwell on what has not been done, what is far from being accomplished and the devastation that still plaques the city, my approach to today is more about celebrating the positive energy that has come out of tragedy. I do this not to forget the disaster, but rather to recognize the resilience of an amazing community who, left to basically fend for themselves, has made tremendous progress. They said they would come back, they would rebuild - and they certainly are doing their best to do so.
To see examples of exciting projects happening in the ‘new’ New Orleans, visit social inovation organization Alldaybuffet’s New Orleans 100 Project, an initiative to “highlight and encourage discussion about 100 of the most innovative and world-changing ideas to take root in the city since Katrina.”
Also read my post on greensear.ch about sustainable re-building practices. Here is an excerpt:
Today marks the three year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina’s landfall and devastating destruction of the city of New Orleans and the surrounding gulf coast region. As an outside observer, one who fell in love with the culture of this unique place from the first time I visited, it has been hard to watch the slow pace of recovery, to hear the heart breaking stories of the systemic failure of both national and local disaster relief and to realize that much of what the people there have had to endure post-Katrina simply never should have happened. However, in the midst of the chaos of recovery, something positive has started to become very clear; the rebuilding of the Gulf Coast region represents an historic opportunity to actually change the infrastructure of a city from the ground up, to do things differently and perhaps, with the correct combination of innovative ideas, sustainable practices and local involvement, to do them better.

It’s symbolic, if coincidental, that tonight Barack Obama will accept the Democratic Party nomination for president of the United States, on the 45th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech. The New York Times has a moving article today focusing on the handful of Democratic delegates who will be there tonight and who were also there for King’s famous speech on the National Mall on August 28th, 1963.From a practical standpoint, when it is so urgent to get the Republicans out of power before they further wreck the country, I am sorry it’s not Hillary up…
