This is an interactive screen project that reacts by sound input.
When the computer gets a value of sound, flowers appear and come into quick, almost instant, full boom like fireworks on the big screen, a rear projection set up at IAC. Instead of computer graphics, I decided to render the flowers myself to show an expressive and natural image of flowers, using the fluid, seeping tones of watercolors, one of my personal favorite mediums. It was a way to combine the technology of the big screen and a painterly traditional method of artmaking into one piece.
I painted each frame of animation of a blooming flower with watercolors on paper. A flowing background of soft warm colors, also painted, blends in and out with the flowers in the foreground. These scanned images were then scanned and imported into Eclipse. The size, position and numbers of flowers on screen is generated by computer programming.
For the sound input, instead of voice input or claps that may change the mood of the piece into something lighter-hearted, I decided to use the sound of a traditional drum, making the project into a performative work in line with the larger-than-life size of the projected flower image. The deep resounding beat of a drum and the variations in loudness and strength that is possible from one traditional musical instrument would translate to different combinations of flower image sizes and repetitions on screen.
