Chip Select on AD5206
Original post by Running to Stand Still on Running to Stand Still

Ai-Chen and I did a bit of rewiring on the Secret Tree circuit board. One of the problems we had last week was that all of the ground wires for the LEDs on the trees were connected to two PCB terminals. I didn’t purchase enough terminal at RadioShack so that every pair could have a ground of its own. This not only made things messy, but it also made the connections suspect.
The other major discovery I made which explained much of the circuit’s random (unintended) behavior was that the two AD5206 chips interfered with one another. I plugged a single LED into each of the twelve outputs (across the two chips) and found that a simple test program didn’t operate properly when both chips were running. As soon as I disconnected the three data lines (CLK, SDI, and CS) from the second chip, the first chip would work properly. I wondered if there might be some sort of “floating” condition when the two chips were used together. Since CLK and SDI were shared, I hypothesized that CS was likely the culprate. To test this, I added 10K pull-down resistors on the chip selects of both chips. It worked! The test program dimmed the lights in the proper sequence rather than skipping around randomly on the third and fourth outputs.

Over the weekend I’ve struggled with getting the comments to work on this blog. It looks like it’ll be more trouble than it’s worth. Which is too bad. I love getting feedback. I love people challenging what I’m doing. Just the fact that people are reading or looking at what I’m doing is pretty satisfying in itself. Discussion is active thought. Also this weekend, I was lucky enough to get a couple blog mentions for the BlinkCam (Thank you for your support Despina and Regine). It was first picked up by WMMNA, which is a blog that I love and subscribe to. The collation of so much good stuff going on (and first hand!) is a wonderful resource. From there it was picked up by the ever-vigilant Gizmodo (whose headline at the time of this post was “Robot Sex: It’s Here”) — always fighting the good fight to bring us the latest gadgetry and detritus from the nether-regions of the internet and beyond. Gizmodo’s regular readers seem to enjoy Gizmodo’s collation as well. I’ve decided to post here the comments that the BlinkCam garnered on the day that it was posted. I think the comments speak for themselves, but I will say that comment #17 is a fairly good metric as to what lies beneath. Here they are:
#1) EQC says:
Wouldn’t it make more sense to take a picture of what you *would* have seen had you not blinked? Turn the camera around, and it’ll make more sense. Who wants a bunch of pictures of themselves with their eyes closed?
#2) Image of Fuzz Fuzz says:
Someone get this guy 50cc’s of girlfriend! Stat!
#3) Cobolman2 says:
And not only is does the incredible Blink-Cam take washed-out pictures of your own face every six seconds, but it also doubles as birth control! Act now!
#4) CBMTTek says:
Ladies and gentlemen, may I present the new 40 year old virgin.
#5) atomx says:
worst invention ever.
#6) Marty200 says:
He probably loses more time actually looking at the photos of when he blinked.
mg
#7) frndlybnny says:
Well, I would post a snotty comment about his invention, but how much time am I going to lose doing that? Eh, what the hell: that thing is utterly fucktarded. Will he go on to invent the submarine screen-door next? We can only hope.
#8) CafeRacer1200 says:Have you looked around you lately? Maybe I WANT to miss some of what presents itself before me.
#9) Eugene says:
A Polaroid picture? Does have stock in the company or has he never heard of a digital camera?
#10) SuppleMonkey says:
What’s wrong with this guy?
#11) canfezplay says:
i can live with losing eight days, compared to the 31025 that i have total (thats for 85 years)..ok so 31017…whoopdee freaking doo
#12 obbie says:
its on polaroid film? man that must be expensive!
#13) sam_i_am says:
Anna Nicole Smith would be six feet under if she had Blink-Cam.
#14) Fluidity says:
So fucktarded that you just have to be impressed.
#15) kevininstereo says:
just give me a camera and I’ll do the same… 100% of my photos are taken of a person in mid-blink. Where’s my medal?
#16) blore40 says:
Narcissus!
#17) qwertyblue says:
quite a stupid invention, but funny all the same. As soon as I read I thought the exact same as you Marty200, and I laughed when I read kevininstereo’s comment. good stuff.
Thanks for the feedback guys! Let’s keep the conversation rolling.

Second Wearable Cable Attempt
Original post by Running to Stand Still on Running to Stand Still
10:06 pm | Categorized: Wearables | Comments Off
I tried again to make another cable prototype yesterday afternoon.
Applying the First Shield Layer

Applying the Second Shield Layer

My sewing was not entirely straight, so I’m not sure how well the prototype will carry audio signals. There may even be shorts between the layers. My next step is to test the “cable” with an audio signal. I want to try the wearable cable with a microphone to see how much noise my homemade cable produces. I also need to terminate the shield and signal wires with rings so I can solder wires or other connectors to them.
I’ve had another idea about how to make the cables: if I use wider strips of conductive fabric, I could make piping with a stitch of conductive thread down the middle. This would be easier to construct than my second prototype.
I’ve discovered that three layers of fabric and the associated stitching produce a fairly stiff package. I’m not sure if this will work well for creating curved “wire” paths in clothing.

Full Botanicalls circuit with solar sensor battery boost
Kate Hartman and I are working on augmenting Botanicalls with a solar panel that will act as both a light sensor and a battery charger for each plant in the project. The full circuit schematic is above with a detail showing the solar charge and sensor connections below. We’re planning to try a 3 Volt rechargeable battery with a low-drop voltage regulator for our power supply. Click on each of the images for a full-size graphic.

“there’s something about me that makes me forgettable.” she purred this out, sullen and indifferent. “we’re born alone and we die alone. maybe I just remind people that.”
he shakes his head, disagreeing like a complaint.
she could tell him about the routine of life, how she glides a few inches above it. she could tell him about the African coast, how it turns orange at the end of the summer or how she is never in any of her dreams.
he wouldn’t remember any of it.
‘if time is immeasurable, then how do you know when you’re finished? how do you know when it’s over?’
she wanted to ask.
maybe he would say that time is only immovable, flawed yet thorough. but he felt her pushing it against his eyes like the landscape - peninsulas with lonely fingers, extra letters.
she sighs, “i have this home, but I’m still homesick.”

ITP: Solar Powered
Original post by Rob Faludi on Rob Faludi's Blog
2:11 pm | Categorized: SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES | Comments Off
![]()
Initial Sketch for Project Icons
The ITP Solar Powered project will channel power into many of the small electrics on the ITP floor, using energy created by our rooftop solar panel. The aim of the project is to create high visibility for sustainable power while fully utilizing our limited clean energy resources.
Currently the solar panel is set up to charge two 60Ah lead-acid battery packs in alternation. While one battery drinks up sunny delight on the 12th Floor, the other is wheeled down to the 4th Floor for use. There its built-in inverter will power a set of AA and 9-Volt battery charging units. The small batteries, once loaded with solar-sourced electricity, will be able to power microcontrollers, motors, art projects, remote sensing systems, cameras, sound recorders and anything else with modest electrical needs. If enough capacity remains, video cameras, iPods and laptop computers could also plug in and take a drink from our nearest star. Because rechargeable batteries are reused rather than being thrown away, the project will also save the materials used in creating alkaline batteries while removing their toxic products from our waste stream.
Batteries are pretty small and the power inside is invisible. There needs to be a clear indication of which projects and devices are running off the sun, so that this project can pave the way for bigger things. Visibility, labeling and signage will be as important as the power and technologies that are used. The main battery charging station should be in a high traffic location with clear signs and attractive color graphics. It needs to be obvious to members of the ITP community so that they are reminded to use it, and for visitors so that they can learn more about our sustainability endeavors. Rebecca Bray will be creating the graphic designs for the project. Gallery exhibits and show pieces will be able to feature an ITP Solar Powered logo on their signs and web sites. Stickers and hang tags will be available for anyone who uses solar juice in their camera, recorder or iPod. To expand the initiative, similar identification materials will be available for projects that are human-powered, recycled, reused or otherwise “green” in nature.
It is hoped that this small beachhead for clean power can be useful as a demonstration of our commitment to sustainable energy, support expansion of our rooftop solar system, and continue the promotion of sustainable practices at ITP and NYU.
