Energy Conversion Worksheet
March 8th, 2008
Week 7, Sustainable Energy
Information compiled in this worksheet can be used to help troubleshoot circuitry in my Midterm Project. With similar information collected about the energy requirements of the load, I will be able to determine discrepancies between input and output energy and modify the circuit accordingly.

Burning the Future: Coal in America (A Film Review)
March 5th, 2008
Week 6: Sustainable Energy
I went to the opening of Burning the Future: Coal in America, Friday, 2/29/08. When we were children, my father admonished us to, “TURN OUT THE LIGHTS !!!” This film was much more effective. Residents all up and down the Appalachians are losing their culture of the land to Mountain Top Removal coal “mining.” Some call this the greatest human rights violation ever in the US. It is all in the name of energy and the result of the [perverse] coal lobby.
One of the most compelling scenes of the film involves a group of residents standing in Time Square after a demoralizing visit to the UN Committee on Sustainable Development. One woman raised her hands and yelled, “Turn off the lights.” The ecologist, Ben Stout, and a resident of Coal River, Bo Webb, joined David Novack, the director/producer (Brooklyn resident), for an eye opening Q/A after the screening. I think I am going to use some of the material from these web sites to craft something for my Collective Storytelling final project — Library of Congress sponsored an Audio/Photo archival project in anticipation of a culture lost.
I learned about this method of mining some years ago watching a PBS documentary, but then it was the environmental ravage that struck home — Filling valleys with excavation waste, obliterating mountains. Burning the Future really brings home the impact to people, their communities and culture. It’s classic divide and conquer on the part of the coal mining lobby. Bo Webb likens the inaction on the part of many in his community to battered wife syndrome. Many have been made to believe jobs are at stake. The statistics are clear though. The region has lost mining jobs since the introduction of Mountain Top Removal and abandonment of underground mining.
