Communication Lab | Final Project | coping copies
posted by md1660

My final project for Com Lab is based on the text of “The work of art in the age of mechanical reproduction ” of Walter Benjamin after reading this essay i start thinking about photography in a different way. I always like photography because is the absolute medium to capture moments. But i never thought about the next level of photography witch is the production or in better words the reproduction of the image. So, this idea of coping the same image in many copies and then looking for the original one become the concept of my final project.

In my free time i am taking black and white images and couple of months ago I toke this image in Morning side Heights, where i live in Manhattan. Then i print this photograph, and as you can see i am not good at this, and it toke me some hours experimenting in the dark room with light and exposure time. The outcome was 10 completely deferment images, with different shadows and lights (one of those images looks like THIS). In this images your eyes focus in different things (not in all of them but in some of them is very obvious). So i decide to make a poster and put all of them, one next to the other, and show the deference of the same image. Finally at the bottom of the poster as references i put the phrases, from Benjamin’s essay, which are related to this concept.

Later, i print the poster, and i went back again to the place that i toke the photo (few months ago) and i toke a photo of the poster. This image was for projecting it to class, and use it as a reference of different media. HERE you can see how this image looks like.

This was my idea, for expressing this project, but i was felling that something was missing. And i decide to keep looking for something more. After some days, a new idea came to me, and i want back to the place that i had toke all this photos. This time I did not press the button to my camera, but instead of that i press the record button of a sound recorder. I record as may sounds i could from the surrounding environment. And them i did exactly the same process but for the sound. I cope the sound that were best for this and I increase or decrease the time of the sound. The outcome is something like THIS. And then i put all the sounds together, and i (would) use this as “soundtrack” of my presentation. And this was sound like THIS.

And finally this is it, a had some further ideas, how i could do more thing with the sound, but this week was so busy and i could not 100% complete it. . .
