METAFORMS
FALL 2007 MIDTERM REVIEW OCTOBER 29TH, 2007
CONCEPT PRESENTATIONS
ITP/NYU DANA KARWAS
INSTRUCTOR: DANA KARWAS
http://www.itp.nyu.edu/blogs/metaforms

The field of architecture is constantly in search of new species of form. Most recent technological movements and capacities are utilized in this pursuit. The increased presence and prominence of new media in the context of architecture justifies a separate study of the forms that arise at the intersection of the two fields. Such generalized entities can be regarded as Metaforms.

CLASS MANIFESTOS:

James Kolstad:
Manifesto:Reservoir

A reservoir is a holding. A container. A source. A supply. A reservoir takes. A reservoir gives. It is an exchange.

The Reservoir holds histories, narratives, memories. It receives these, contains them, releases them outside of itself. It takes life. It gives life. It is a body that is never the same from one moment to the next: its molecules shift, drift, sink, flow. It is a pump. Water from unknown places brought to it through veins, water made visible and held, water released through arteries that course beneath the earth, the muck, the street, to slake a City parched. It exchanges one City for another.

The Metaform responds to the conditions and constraints of Reservoir. As such, the Metaform is Fluid. It absorbs the histories, narratives, and memories of Reservoir; indeed, these are forces that inflect the Metaform’s evolution. As Reservoir changes from one moment to the next, so too the Metaform is mutable, always already becoming something else, an always-process which influences its form. The Metaform is a multiplicity of layers. No one layer is separate from another; boundaries are murky like deep water, processes flow back and forth between layers. The layers swell, bloat, distend, engorge; they collapse, shrink, contract. They are lungs, mediating inside/outside. Gestating within the earth, histories suppressed, unknown, unconscious; swirling within the Reservoir, narratives coming into being; erupting into City, memories released, manifest, conscious.

James Daher:
A manifesto to advance order, beauty and control in the age of divine renewal

Preserve beauty through repentance; Immortality through sacrifice.
The manifestation of the advanced order is the active cleansing of the soul. There is but one intention: to reach god. The rapid advancement of our species is necessary. Our time is but limited. Reach spiritual renewal and bring everlasting peace. Propel the human into the arena of divine immortality.
The time of spiritual resurgence is upon us. Before us, humanity consisted of anguish, nostalgia, pain, and mortality. In Cathedral City, at the center stands the obelisk, our humanity is enshrined by a new beauty, joy and immortality. Beyond Cathedral City the lords war is poised for victory. We must rally together, and with the power of God on our side reign in the new world.
Youth and beauty forever, are theirs, to those who repent. The immortals walk amongst us in this order of divine Christ. Ours is an age of absolute spiritual conviction.
The establishment of the spirit of eternal omnipresence in Cathedral City must permeate immediate and faithful projections of ourselves in light of our divine lord. Within the realm of the spirited resurgence we manifest constant renewal.
In the land of the Immortals there is no other. Life is devoted to worship. Only those who worship will be given true freedom in the afterlife. They will protect Cathedral City in this time of war, and be rewarded through the power and intention of our Lord in the time of peace, near at hand.
Cathedral City is dived. Immortals, Dwellers, and half-breeds. Immortals are superior; they are the gods of Cathedral City. Apostles devote their spiritual pursuits to the Immortal cause of Cathedral City, within and through this pursuit they may find the pathway to god. Apostles spend their life reaching toward potential immortal status.

The individual without dynamic spiritual vision directed towards god is spent dwelling in the futile time of the past beneath Earths crust hidden from divine truth. Dwellers are removed from Cathedral City through eugenic selection. However, the word of our lord is delivered within the establishment of the underworld (inhabited by the spiritless dweller), and opportunities for repentance are granted. The Dweller: prisoner, sickly and morbid exist amongst the odor of their own decaying minds will repent their sins and be freed from the fated hell of their existence.

Maria Fernanda Mendez
The process of abandonment as it operates in space. . .suggests an initial scattering of abandoned structures, characterized by the occurrence of many small groups of abandoned houses. With the passage of time, this pattern is intensified; the broad scatter is maintained, although the small groups now contain a greater number of structures.

A two stage process is clearly suggested; the initial abandonments occur and later consolidation follows…. It suggests a which resembles the propagation of a plant species or the diffusion of information.
It is essentially a contagious sequence….

. . .[O]nce abandonment has begun it is likely to be very difficult to stop. It may
become almost a selfsustaining process under the force of contagion…

Michael Dear cited in A Plague on Your Houses: How New York Was Burned Down and National Public Health Crumbled by Debora Wallace
My metaform lives inside one of the numerous empty shell buildings in Bushwick, Brooklyn. The form appears in the middle of the desolated and unfriendly urban landscape,
remains of the urban decay process of the neighborhood, altering the perceptual condition of the local space.
The structure that contains the metaform doesn’t disappear behind it but rises to the surface and redefines itself, strangeness the feeling of exteriority.
The metaform is a signal of existence, change and transformation. It has become a parasitic event. Living in a ghost building, evidence of the rough history of the site that is
about to disappear to give place to the new contagion.

This urban intervention is in Lozano Hemmer terms relationship specific. Every building can be seen as a performance envelope already presenting potential events.
The building suspends the unfolding of those events for its own duration.

The metaform doesn’t pretend to be a reflection of the reality but a revision. An augmentation of urban reality and not a representation of it…

Eugene Ahn
Body Architecture

Body Architecture is the manifestation of the desire to create a notion of new home as a space that is flexible, movable and changeable. By building micro environment to the body, our body becomes a plane enables present action to take place, with the sense of being connected, secured and comforted which our home is providing.
We expand our group of body by creating mobile community of the flexible plug in-ed space. Our new body is mutable architecture that is agent of the new culture. We move ourselves to the realm of mutable structure where our physicality is no longer separated from the outside. We intervene, emerge and even become the space without distinctions. As a space, it will allow us greater curiosity and movement to explore and wander around new groups and the cities, which will drive formation of a human’s notion of home and community in new way.

Tonio Jung
High Line Forest

The High line forest is an eco-friendly environment in a 13 acre rail yard on 34th St between 10th and 11th avenues in NYC which is preserving an old railroad, the High Line. This artificial forest aims to provide an opportunity for forest eco - therapy for humans, and contributes to preserving the High Line as a part of an eco-friendly environment. This forest is a vital creature so that it can interact with the environment and human beings and make decisions for itself. People are supposed to keep this area pure in order to keep the forest structure which consists of several moving cubes vigorous.

The High Line forest measures the purity of the indoor forest and then reacts to it. For instance, when the forest environment stays pure, the cubes move to allow entrance into the forest, letting people get a chance for some forest therapy. Or, the cubes can rearrange to form a roof for blocking ultraviolet rays and rain. On the other hand, when the ecosystem of the forest is unhealthy or weak, the cubes can move to block people from entering. This way, people are motivated to maintain the forest as an Eco-friendly-environment. For example, using organic soil and planting methods rather than harsh chemicals.

The high line rail yard on 34th ST is the one last major undeveloped area in NYC. So, many people are very interested in projects in this area. New York City has plans to develop this area into a commercial and residential district. I am very disappointed with this proposal, and I strongly insist that one last possibility to include a real Eco- friendly-environment in NYC must not be lost. Even if this project is not feasible in reality, I believe it is a good idea to alarm people of the Ecosystem at risk.

Young Sang

this is an experiment about life cycle of an architecture and relationship between architecture, people and all kinds of surroundings.
this world demands us to be a (multi)functional being .
if you are not (multi)functional or you fail to function as much as they want, that means you’re useless here.
the absence of clear purpose and objective is never acceptable.
proper execution of its role seems the only reason for life and the reason for being of everything in this city seems to equal to its function.
this design experiment starts from questions of curiosity.
“what if we ignore those rules that we set for the architecture? what if we have a purely nonfunctional architecture?
if the architectures have to be taken down because they lost their functions in society,
can we just have one non-purpose-oriented architecture whose only function is to live its own life?”
I’d like to see if this is possible or not, and how we can approach to this idea.
I want to explore this imagination-even if it ends up with just a daydream.

Ben Chao

The steam engine, a landmark development of the industrial revolution, enabled people to travel to places farther and faster, giving them the freedom of movement. The French revolution gave rise to modern democracy, giving people the hope to freely govern themselves. The Internet brought us freedom of information, as anybody with a computer could choose what he or she consumes and publishes.

We propose that the next autonomy we will gain is the freedom of space. Walls, buildings, and roads will no longer dictate how we interact within an area. Instead, our movement and thoughts will define how, when, and where these structures exist, giving us the freedom to change the space we work, play, and live in.

We are here to explore a world where physical boundaries is simultaneously broken and reconstructed; a world where previously immutable objects are changing constantly.

Shilya Lee
Hoisting Building

Building has long been a symbol of stable, hard and cold, for its basic function of providing shelter. Although how a building works for people usually can be told by its appearance and location, time’s effects on people inside of it seldom be revealed outside. Now, it’s time to think about some questions:
- Can appearance of a building become more flexible/adjustable?
- How a building can reflect people’s activities?
- How people’s needs for space can be satisfied at different time?

Catherine Tai
Turnstile is a monstrous objects for me. Both its structure and its functionality of blocking people and continuously asking for money.
In my project, I want to make it turn good before everyone forgot about its existence.
By pulling him out from the underground, I decided to give a life to him. He will be helpful to people because he is telling information of the underground to the upper ground.
The reason of choosing the turnstile is first, personally, i found the structural design interesting and the size is immersive which makes me associate with a monster. Secondly, I am afraid this beautiful urban object will be disappeared and forgotten one day. So I am building a pre-memorial landmark to celebrate the object and also give some other meaning on top of it.

Here are several main points of the manifesto:
1. Make a structure alive, by transforming the existing structure of turnstile into unexpected form and space.

2. Do something good for the people.

3. Linking the upper lower ground activities.

4. Transferring information related to the subway.

5. Create a landmark for the Union Square.

Ana Gutierrez

Green can emerge from any given surface, this is a demonstration.

An organic shape unfolding from the earth creates a second amorphous surface, a playground, a place, a shade embracing
society, as nature, as performance.

A new organic dimension un-breaking the knot between environment and performance - growing ,changing, renewing, evolving. An indestructible green space.

This metaform will give the space for cultures to re-create their own activities and habits.

A place for people to view not only as the emotion of a show, but
as a lesson of the space itself.

This space will be as protective as it is open, as natural as it is different, performance as use, performance as structure.
Green performance space.

Jaewook Shin

Turnstile is a form of gate, which allows one person to pass at a time.
But it feels rather blocking than allowing.
Specially those in subways.

It made with metal, feels heavy and cold…
it spins, stops, spins, stops…
Typical form is shaped from its function only.
Again, the function for not allowing, but blocking.
In fact, it exists only for the function.

It is one of things that we use dairy basis.
But never be appreciated as well as we use.

What if those form and spins have other functions?
What if the other function can give people better feeling.
Not only people who is using. People above on the ground too.

I would like to make metaform as new function of turnstile that will be good for space and people for both underground and above ground.

Greg Stringer
Beacons

Informed by the tradition of paper lanterns, beacons are ghostly apparitions that transform and mutate according to their surrounding environment. They will change in both scale and form. Imagery pulled from geotagged photos posted to the internet is projected on the skins of the beacons. The beacons will light in nighttime and move to entice people to enter the border.

Younghyun Chung
Green Seed

The Big Apple has become a necropolis for decades. Old-fashioned, overcrowded, and squalid streets. If the streets are inconvenient for New Yorkers and visitors, it must be much inconvenient especially for people with disabilities. Moreover, the streets are also far from sustainability. However, a large number of ideas and technologies that improve the streets already exist in the world and other cities are applying accessible technologies as well as green technologies. Why not in the New York City? Make the Big Apple the Big Green Apple not a rotten apple.

The Green Seed starts from ITP. The meaningful ideas come out from the department. People pulled out the green movement by themselves. It makes a core, the origin of the Big Bang which will expand to every direction. The seed has every ideas, technologies and minds that will improve our environment lovely.

We are a product of our awareness, the composite of all we pay attention to. Our beliefs, thoughts, emotions and where we place our attention, create our experience. Any issues around boundaries, expanding area, creating new area, all relate to this center.

My Metaform trigger the expansion of the range of forms by mind-expanding approaches and link with a new perception of space. The form itself could create environment for viewers to explore and provide a space in which to contemplate the boundlessness of human beings ability for physical and spiritual experience.

in the ocean of new york’s indifference, in a sea of constant change, we all have a story in common. a consistent change in parameters, but the rule stays the same. moving stories of light project onto static images on the wall of a community park next to a subway station, at the crossroads of gentrification and transport. no man’s land, every man’s land, everyone’s story, a mashup. a collective collage of the experience of the people.

I am infatuated with urban spaces and the relationships people have with them. If you have ever wandered a city late at night, half-lost, looking desperately for something — anything — that you haven’t seen before, hoping to find inspiration in the everyday and the extraordinary alike, than you speak my language. Through my work in the audio, visual and tactile realms, I seek to explore the psychology of cities, emphasizing the moments of serendipity, paranoia, alienation and discovery that urbania invokes.

Urban spaces can inspire the best and worst in everyone, bringing out the extremes of our imaginations. When paired with the right triggers, these visions can develop a life of their own in the night hours. City-dwellers tend to take pride in their ability to plan a safe route from point A to point B at night, and know which side of what street will serve them best in this endeavor. Stereotypes are held as fact, patterns become ritual. Residents of this city are encouraged to see and say something; to find reasons to fear the unfamiliar. That, honestly, terrifies me.

In this project, I aim to address this growing trend towards fear and lost serendipity while temporarily highlighting a temporary eyesore that blankets our city’s buildings. New York City, possibly more than any US city, is besieged by construction and beautification processes that flood the sidewalks and streets of this largely pedestrian city. The scaffold systems in many neighborhoods have become associated as one with the very buildings they shroud, often times providing a familiar and frightening building face when removed. And while they offer cover for the building, they often serve as ominous constructs for passers-by, harboring unknown complications to a complicated life.

As scaffolding is by description a construct defined by its host building and temporary by design, it seems most appropriate to let it play host to works that are themselves nonpermanent and site-definted. So, it is my intent to project characters on these structures, living solely within the temporary boundaries of the scaffold. Using high-power projectors, I’m hoping to illustrate the good and bad in everyday life that we city-folk so often ignore, projecting our hopes and fears. Hopefully by tripping people out of their everyday reverie for even just a moment, I will be able to reawaken some of joy and fear of exploration that seems harder and harder to relive in this city.

Rory Nugent

In a world where art and media are infringing upon almost every frontier of both the physical and virtual realms, it seems bizarre that we very rarely see grassroots or guerrilla movements commandeering our mundane city landscape as canvas for their work or a podium for their voice. The world has become overcrowded, the air too thick to breathe, and many have now agreed that our planet is in line for a rather unfortunate fate. Advocates and the media have all tried their hand at suggesting ways of changing our lifestyle, habits, and even our diet, all with the hopes of ultimately changing our minds. But, they need to be speaking our language and inhabiting the same space that we day after day inhabit. Most people, whether they realize it or not, spend a great deal of their working hours and down time in a virtual space. Through their computer screen or television, they experience and absorb a reality that is pulled and pushed in every direction so much so that its difficult to still consider it a slice of traditional reality. This new space is a extrapolation of the world we inhabit every day, it is a hyper reality. So, how can art, media, and in this case, an environmental message, be understood and enjoyed on these new terms in a fantastical way without an agenda or forceful hand feeding? We create a form of hyper reality that rests side by side with the mundane. A fantastical earthy landscape of plants, fruit, and natural shade that rivals modern architecture and sculpts our vision for a cultural change in a way that we all now understand. A framed artifact of a future utopia. What our future cities may be like if we manage to open our eyes and salvage our dying planet.

For your Midterm on October the 29th

You will need to have the following:
1.manifesto for your project
2.4-5 (or as many as you want) new beautiful images of your concept these can include diagrams, sketches, 3D models, storyboards, photoshop documnts, video stills. We need to be curious when we look at these.
3. supporting documents. your initial scripts (narrative and computational)
4. site photos, or maps, site research.
On October the 30th you will be presenting your project to get some feedback from a community of architects, academics, artists, and ITP faculty/alumni. This is a conceptal presentation. You will be presenting from your computer or online, so the manifesto, images, photos, and supporting documents should be in some type of presentation format so we are not scrolling through your blogs.

The Midterm will begin at noon and go until 6pm on October the 29th. Each person will present for 20 minutes. You will be expected to stay for all of the first half or all of the second half. We will fill in times today in class.

Well thought out
potentially infringing upon the neighborhood
I feel the neighborhood should help sculpt the idea
i’m not sure I understand the immigration topic
Looks famliar shape. I want to know more connetction with concept and story, then why it has to be looked like that?
you are wanting to create some green effect to your neighborhood. I really like it.
The proposed images, especially the one on the bottom-right, look extremely interesting. I’m not entirely familiar with the concept, but I can read that it’s about green-oriented construction, which is something I’d love to see come to life.
Embedding natural into human living space fits environment protect trend
Maybe this is an snowboarding place in the cities which they never had snow.
The shape is interesting but i think i can be more related to the site content-wise.
1. I like a dome shape of your metaform and the grass.
What I like most about this space: Is the opportunity for there to be multiple uses that engage
the public. Perhaps encourage creative use of the space.
Most importantly, I feel that what is made should encourage communal use.
1. Anna: elegant, practical, inspiring for social change and potential to change dynamics in the neighborhood.
How the different culture emerges and how the function and form of the space will represent/ encourage them
—————

2. Maria
It is very cool idea to put an living creature/ death building together. It might be really interesting to see how thr living creature will effect the building usage and people ‘s perception
It’ll be good to combine yours and kokkugia’s algorithmic generative forms.
I know we’d talked about this quite a bit last week, so I’m not sure I have much else to add to the discussion except to say that I do agree with Daniel Perlin’s critique of needing a strong narrative. However, I do really like the idea of creating a gigantic, crazy projection in an otherwise dead building, and I think something great will come of that.
I don’t understand the connection between the graphic inside and the building
Microsoft screensaver?
I feel it needs more intent
I find interesting to grab the existing facade of a building and bring it to live throught recollecting data of the area, visually it could bring an interesting the fact of visualizing data on the site itself. how do you think your metaform will be most tactile? visually ? is there any other access?\
you are creating new organic shape. give it a birth.
It will create a whole new experience for passing by the building.
I think Lighting is very important for this project. So i think more attention can be paid about the lighting in the surrounding environment
I’m not exactly sure what the purpose of the object is. I’d like to know more about the
experience I would receive if I were to visit this place. Can I enter the building? What do I gain
from it?
love it! beautifies without detracting from the environment, subtle and mysterious, opens up the imagination.
————-

3. Rucyl
-Interesting mockup though.
Moving corner is quite interesting. What is the power source, wind or electricity?
creating a form out of a projection, creating a space that does not exist through a visualization i would like to understand what are you expecting to create as far as circulation around your piece…\
I really like the sort of flow-y feeling that your projection (by my understanding) is seeking to evoke. Of course, content will be the big issue, but I think I can see where it’s going, and it could be really beautiful.
living
plants, vines
creeping
structure or projection?
how does the content relate to the space?
You want to show the effect of video using three dimensional screen, then why do you need a form that you make with paper besides visually interesting. Your contents will be a video, then what about the form itself?
Rucyl Mills : Having fun in a place people not used to is cool!
I didnt quite get it……
but the sculpture looks beautiful, like the one in kokkugia.
While visually interesting I’m curious to know what the content of the video is. What does the
object bring to the community?
content of video? day or night?
———

4. James D.
Story based metaform is cool and creating more meanings for public/society.
I have to start by saying the rendering is gorgeous, though I should also follow that by saying I have no idea how you’re going to pull parts of this off in real life. I’m extremely curious to see how this works out in the end, and think that you’ve got a very rich narrative to explore as you move forward in this.
Highlander
It’s really scary. It’ll be good to combine yours and kokkugia’s algorithmic generative forms.
I wonder how large the scale of this structure.
Feels religious in some way
Very well thought out
Theatrical + dramatic
Interesting story. Maybe the way it looks too real or modesty than his imagination.
What will be your grab to realty ,,what will make the real site and your narrative come together, does this happen? a t what point and how?
I like your story behind your metaform, but you need to simplify your concept.
I’m interested to know how the story is represented in the form.
really imaginative and maybe controversial..how would people interact with it?

—————————–

5. Piama
It might be really interesting to see the historical contents with futuristic imagination presented
I really hope this is built, and I would be interested to know your process (i.e. who you needed
to contact… etc. etc.)of attempting to construct it. I particularly like the idea of an added
pathway that would be FREE of RUNNERS!!!!!
Piama Habibullah : Totally change the scene and function of a place.
I am still not entirely sure where you’re heading with your final project, but I like both the site you’ve chosen and the focus on the water forms themselves (as well as your earlier notes about Central Park culture and psycho joggers). I’m looking forward to this one.
I really like the intentions
Well illustrated
I don’t know what does your metaform mean to people. What do you want to them feel in it?
The idea is very easy to understand and connect with
I like the drive to connect people more closely with nature
Do you consider this an installation that will make the viewer experiment the space different? what type of experience are you trying to bring the viewer and what in the site is driing you to create this experience?\
You had bunch of ideas and I don’t know which one you choose..
i love that. u should make ppl joking, biking and swimming or ice skating together!!!!
what a harmony~~

———————–

6. James K.
Using water to connect cities is an interesting aspect of thinking. Your manifesto was one of my favorites of the class, and really highlights the defining concepts of both the water and the form you’re aiming to create. I think you’ve really got the right frame of mind going.
I don’t entirely understand the form but his inspirations are very clear
Abstract? Practical?
fluidity and layer is very synced idea with your theme
I love your explain about layers that can contain many things.
I think it’s better to have some visualizaiton. The analysis is very detailed, but i couldnt reli imagine the final form.
You’d better to choose one or two layers to dig into express your thought.
layers? Fluid…. I think this is a great route to take. Layers? Fluid: What is the feeling I get? is
this something to be built, or is it theory. i like the idea of fluid as a form to work with, maybe narrow down your layers, then build up.

——————————–

7. Young Hyun
Why ITP? I think its to obvious. Pick somewhere else, and why not China Town? I think it should
be in China Town.
Like the image. Like the idea of greenery. I’d like to know more about how the object is
changing over time. Seems as though it is.
What is the objects intention? Why? explosion of technology? Boundaries…..
Cracking and reshaping the boundry is cool and means a lot for existing living area.
I’m really liking the eco-architecture track you’re taking with this assignment, and I’m really curious to see how you’re tying this big bang, all-encompassing concept into your form.
I don’t understand the metaform or the intentions
Confusing What if there is already the function for the target? For example edge of sideways already have angle for
the wheel chair or stroller.
I enjoy the green aspects, how is this metaform going to grow? how is this grow going to be expressed and related to the site is comming from?
I like that. your metaform idea has some kind of performance aspect, but are you really think you can make a friendly street with green cloth? after that I can be another wastes in this city.
How does one transform to another? i think the in between can be very interesting.
are u thinking to do the transformation? if yes, it will be an organic way? or mechanical way?
Why don’t you make a killer image? Better graphic models make your idea better.
would this be a temporary form? does the explosion happen once? or maybe an aspect of the form could represent a big bang, and then return to a “before” state.

———————————-

8.Hyeki
explosions are cool! Like to know what the message is. As a person participating with your
piece, how do I feel? Scared? Happy? Do I die if it explodes?
Take people’s activities as priority is an cool way to transforming a space.
I think the embrace of the big bang theory as applied to a metaform comes through fairly well in your concept model, and while I’m still not entirely clear on your final project plan, the idea of attempting to create a unique experience for people is one that I really like, and can’t wait to see.
Don’t understand
Expansion
Explosion of the mind
ShrapnelInteresting modeling but I don’t understand well about connection with mind boundary.
What stimulations are you aiming to create?\
So this is a room full of people and they will have a human explosion? i am not reli sure
I thought the particles were light stands at first time. Is it an one time performance?
What do you express in this metaform?
mind-expanding is great.. is the form the people themselves, or the space in which they are standing?

——————————–

9. Greg
Expanding a small object into a big thing by combining tradition is thoughtful.
The beacon concept you’re working with here is one that I really, really like, especially your approach to calling out the boundaries of the area while seducing people away from it.
Nice, fantastical yet also practical idea
what are this objects bringing to your site?\
so what will be the content about the projection?
will be interesting if it got some relationship with the street
How does it move? What does it mean for the Chinatown area?
Hmmmm. I’m interested to know more about the beacon. Lights? How big?
investigating borders is interesting. what will happen during the day?

———————————

10.Young Sang
will be Interesting for people to know what information will change what part of the creature on what way.
non functioning architectural form:
weather meeter:
Like the idea of exploration of non function. Your form should be so outrageously non functional
that it disturbs me.
You give space a whole new function of representing information.
I love the idea of a non-functional architectural construct. I think we as city-dwellers (especially New Yorkers) are constantly bombarded by information that we don’t need, and so often we try to assign meaning and use to things that have neither. I think this idea has a lot of potential for a final.
This is a bit similar with Catherine’s turnstile, also not specific purpose but maybe trying to map some information on it,
Interesting exploration
Could yield some good ideas since it is not tethered to function Non function (Information)?… but his computer generated image looks cool.
what data are you going to use to create your metaform?\
why are you making non-function structure? your explanation is reminding me of just sculpture or installation,
Although you make it in non-functioning form, it will have a landmark as a function.

————————————–
11.Tonio
Vertical garden will solve the problem of the space in the city and eco friendly. Will be really effective if it is connected with the local farmers and their produces.
autonomus object: cubes moving to help the garden? I like this idea very much… a smart
garden… does it need to be so big? Maybe it can lay down.
Tonio: the gardens move?
Hanging gardens are a beautiful concept, especially in an area which will quickly be overly developed. The shape is extremely interesting, though I’m still very much curious as to how it’ll end up at the final point.
Building respond to natural environment revive what architecture should be for human.
Is it the same site Rory showed in early class? Can’t imagine what you going to make.
Vertical farm
I like the natural input
Don’t understand the function
Living, autonomous structure Garden’s story is fit better to the project, but maybe story with people or society or life will be more challenge.
Why dont you work with organic forms if you are working with gardens wich is narture and organic shapes instead of a straight structure?\
it can be a playground too.

————————————-

12. Eugene
Why? I like the idea of clothing that enhances human extension…. Don’t know how I feel about
the extension in space. I think of Inspector gadget. and Vito acconci did a similar project where
people were wearing their apartments.
Cyborg
Support the body
Wings
well developed.. would the form from the body be left in the space (detachable from the body)?
Abstract idea from scaffoldings’s function and turn it into a totally new thing is amazing.Putting too many things together? I don’t know.
what type of activities are you expecting to have inside your expanding forms?\
what movements you ant this form to represent?\
it begins with Scaffold but ends up with human. great.
I completely love this idea you’re following now of providing scaffolding for people, especially from an expandable and soft angle. The inter-joining community idea is something I hadn’t heard before, but really like. I think this is a great idea that has a ton of potential.
good to play with the formas. so what or where do u think u are putting on?
Why did you change your idea from scaffolding? I really loved that.
——————————-

13. Rory -

What is it that you are saying about the future, and why must this exist in the future. I
particularly like the idea of it existing today as a guerilla movement.
Still wonder what happen after scaffolding will be taken out.
Rise natural things to different height is very cool idea.
Are you creating an area of transition were there is going to be a constant circulation and your form will be changing in texture and light? or are you creating an area that will become an area of a different type of circulaiton maybe a more permanent architecture?\
I think you catch the point from scaffolding, with your idea we can make city more green.
The guerilla gardening idea is one of my absolute favorite concepts in this class, and I think this stands to do very well with public. I really think people are going to love this one.
hey, make water sprays on it to keep the street cool
i think this can be an public quick resting and refreshing spot.
Cool. Your metaform can make NYC more green.
nice to walk through an altered scaffolding space.. could be really aesthetically pleasing, and change your mood upon exiting
———————–

14. Mike D.
what would the text be? I think this is key, and should be considered early and not tacked on at
the end. I’d also like to read the text as a viewer…
so there should be opportunity for that.
Artistic way for representing people inside and outside.
I love the anonymous silhouettes
will be really interesting to see the bodies moving with the altered structure
Interactive with surroundings
Inhabits the space while also blending in or allowing a connection to be understood
interesting thought about site.
I think this can be an exhibition area on the street.
Looks like very practical project. Does it work real time?
great.. check out swoon’s street graffiti, she uses cut outs.
———–

15. Ben
I’d like to know what will cause this? Freedom of space, how does this happen? And I also see
that there might be restriction of space too?
Stretching
Don’t entirely understand the intended form
I like the imagination. Looking forward to seeing the next step.
Are you aiming to have a morfing space ?> what will bethe scale you are working on, ? all manhattan?\
love your manifesto, but very abstract. how can you make your idea people can see?
Movable/moldable architecture is one of my favorite concepts, and one that’s really hard to put into practice. I think there’s a lot of good possibilities in this, especially as a visualization for traffic flows and human movements.
A totally new meaning for land and people. Can people really gain control?
I like the idea behind of freedom of space.
maybe can start in a smaller scale to build it first. tidal waves can be visually very attractive
the content can relate more a bit to turnstile.
Interesting thought about space, architecture, and people.
Ben: no physical boundaries.. do the people blend into each as well?
————————

16. Shilya
How does such an object effect a person in the building, near the building, and below the
building.
Building height as tied to population influx is something that I’m not sure we think about enough, which is why I’m loving this idea so much. I’m not sure entirely how you’re going to make it work in real life, but the concept is fantastic.
hey, put this in a kid’s playground maybe. when they are turning the round about, something one the floor comes out
the relationship of turnstile and city grow can be more clear.
i’m confused about what the actual form is
Don’t understand the turnstiles + population growth correlation with vertical growth
The vertical growth actually scares me
I don’t actually like the vertical expansion of cities
Really want to know what happen when building is down.
Are you keeping this idea as a utopic project, how do you see it comming through in a smaller scale?\
you can use turnstiles to calculate the population of this city, but why do you want to show that with height of building?
Do you really need the turnstile as input? Why don’t you think about other input?

———————

17. Jae-Wook
Jaewook Shin : It’s fun to add vitality to an crowded space.
Data visualization essentially. But, what does it say about you? Your travels, your city?
Using different colors for each line is nice but I prefer previous plane form.
Doesn’t it illegal to beam on to the sky?
I loved the spinning concept you started with, and I’m even happier to see it now relating information that’s easy to put to use. This is the sort of thing I could see myself relying on for my daily commute, and at the same time stands to be a beautiful construct.
I like this version more than the previous one coz it seems related more with the underground.
above ground and underground connection
above ground connection is unclear to me. What’s the point? What is it?
how do you relate the human scale to your metaform? what type of stmulation you want to create? visual sound texture (touch)?)
I like the idea. you are trying to find connection between turnstile and society. Don’t think too much about visualization of turnstile.

——————————–

18. Catherine
Please make a cute and kind monster.
Monster… Give me a story… I want a story about this monster… Kinda reminds me of the film
“James and the Giant Peach”.
I so, so love the monster. It’s funny, because when I pass through turnstyles, they really seem to have a life of their own and they do scare me a bit, so creating a growing monster out of that idea is just brilliant.
Awesome, playful interpretation of a turnstile
Accurately captures and plays off the characteristics of a real turnstile
Cute
Add more personlity to the monster and create some background for him will be cool
Might be scares people which is fun.
the playfulness is refreshing
Where do you see this monster coming out of the earth, what relationship is this monster going to have- is he going to be affected by the site ? or affecting the site?\
love your imagination. with your work, people can change their thought to turnstile.
it is just so cute and cool idea. Change of the monster and their look can be based on some data??

Today in class we will be joined by Jono Podborsek and Roland Snooks of Kokkugia
They will chat with us about their work. The second half of class will be spent with your manifestos and more feedback for your metaforms development. We will also have a mise-en-scène critique session in which i will post your project and we will all write comments about what we see. At the end each one of you will have a collection of small critiques from the class.

For next week you will begin to prepare documents and media for your midterm review which will be held in two weeks on Monday October the 29th.
For your midterm –dun da dun dum dum

Read:The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction from Illuminations by Walter Benjamin
PDF handout in class

Today in class we will present and discuss each metaform concept by taking a look at everyones models, images, and ideas. Students will be expected to not only to present their concept but respond to other student projects as well. We will be joined in class by the guest critic Daniel Perlin who is an artist and former ITP student. We will be chatting with him about his recent project for the Ring Dome and then he will join us in our discussion + feedback for your metaforms. We will also have a short converstion about the Friday biothing presentation.

Today will be full of ideas+feedback, so come prepared to chat about where you are with your metaforms. Also remember this is a semester long project so if you do not have all the conceptual deatils hacked out that is fine.

Your assignment for next week will be to write a manifesto about your metaform.
Made a declaration of your intentions. This Manifesto can be as long as you would like. You will revisit it at the end of the semester once
your project is more developed
.
Some example manifestos can be found at:
