ITP Camp takes place on the 4th floor of 721 Broadway in the heart of New York City.
ITP is a two-year graduate program located in the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University whose mission is to explore the imaginative use of communications technologies — how they might augment, improve, and bring delight and art into people’s lives. Perhaps the best way to describe us is as a Center for the Recently Possible.
ITP Camp is like ITP Classic put in the blender and smooshed into a month. It is ITP’s test kitchen, its R&D arm, its back of the napkin. It’s the place were we encourage you, our faculty, former students, colleagues, and community to experiment, challenge, and play. For 30 years ITP has been a hub of experimentation in art, media and technology. For 2 years ITP Camp has been where ITP tries the newest and edgiest on for size.
ITP’s facilities––its faculty, resident tutors, unique space and equipment––will be at your service. The creative atmosphere will help you generate ideas and implement projects and possibly broaden your own network and community of innovators and thinkers.
18,000 square feet of opportunity!: ITP’s physical space is one of Camp’s best assets — it is a great place to casually connect with people, talk, build or put on your headphones and get down to work on your laptop. The space is equipped with:
- many big screens
- a cisco telepresence unit
- a laser cutter
- a cnc router
- several touch sensitive surfaces and supplies to make your own
- a ceiling pipe grid for weighty project suspension
- a room with multi angle ip-cameras for streaming and archiving
- a well equipped power tools shop with standing and bench tools
- a soft lab with paper/vinyl cutter, sewing machines, embroiderer and pc board printing setup
- an equipment room stocked with production laptops, android devices, high end and unusual cameras, dynamic audio toys, projectors of all sizes and various black box gadgets
The Physical Computing Lab is great for electronics and construction. The Japanese Room is a large, flexible space containing the Soft Lab, a documentation area, supplies and grips for staging a project and quiet work spaces. ITP has 4 classrooms, 2 large lounges, an open floor plan that is highly reconfigurable and a pretty fun foosball table. We expect people to bring their own laptop to work on but if you need to borrow a production laptop with professional and experimental software – we’ve got them for short term checkout.
Attending ITP Camp also affords you access to some great NYU services like these: the NYU Computer Bookstore (right around the corner from ITP), where you can shop for electronics, arduinos, sensors and other cool stuff - you even qualify for educational software and hardware discounts; and NYU’s Advanced Media Services Lab where you have access to a laser cutter twice as big as ours, large format archival printing and rapid prototyping 3D printing.
