Help / BecomingResearchResidents

Residents

Application Process

  1. Who The research residencies are good for graduating students wanting to establish a less traditional career. It can provide an economic and networking base to launch a freelance business or something in the arts, research or academia.
  2. Responsibilities Research residencies break down into the three traditional components of academia:
    1. Service This is a job. There are tasks that need doing at ITP. Those tasks evolve over the years but in the past they have included such things as managing the physical computing lab, maintaining various websites, maintaining the sound and video lab, maintaining the projects or people database.
    2. Tutorial You have to help the students, especially the students in foundation classes. This can take the form of office hours, help sessions or studio hours in a lab.
    3. Research You have to do some interesting work of your own and show it at the end of your residency.
    4. Balance The balance of these components is unevenly distributed over the year. The Fall can be heavy on tutorial, Spring heavy on service and the summer mostly all research.
  3. Where For the Fall of 2012 we are looking for 9 residents in New York.
  4. When Research Residents are chosen by the faculty right after graduation in the Spring. The job starts the week before classes beginning in the Fall. It is a one year appointment
  5. Supervision In general we look for self directed, self starting residents. Residents report for administrative purposes (eg sick days) and some service purposes(eg labs, databases) to Rob Ryan. For general direction in service, tutorial and research they consult with the relevant member of faculty.
  6. Schedule Most research positions are half time 24/hours per week. Residents can also apply to do internships as part of a collaboration between Tisch and IAC in which case they will work full time split between ITP and IAC. Residents' hours must overlap with students, supervisors and administration as necessary but need not be completely traditional.
  7. Criteria The ITP faculty chooses each resident based primarily on how the applicant's strengths for service, tutorial and research line up with the department's current needs and interests.
  8. Benefits Residents can purchase the University's health coverage at employee rates. Some lending agencies will allow a deferment of student loans for this type of "post doc" position that varies by company.
  9. Funds There are no additional funds set aside for materials or travel but in the past residents have received funds for materials or presentations that have seen to also benefit the larger ITP community.
  10. Application Students interested in the position should make George Agudow aware george.agudow@nyu.edu before 5/16. Feel free to add a few bullet points describing your strengths in the three areas of teaching, service and research. Please indicate whether or not you are interested in making your appointment full time by doing an internship with IAC for the other half. After the choices are made at ITP there is a formal procedure which George can assist you with.
