Memo to: ITP Incoming Students
From: George Agudow, Administrative Director
Re: Fall 2008 Semester
To all of our new students for Fall 2008, welcome to ITP!
We have previously sent out notes announcing that ITP's orientation and registration period which will take place during the week of Monday, August 25 -- leading up to the start of classes on Tuesday, September 2.
This letter is meant to provide you with a bit more detail as to what to expect, and how to organize your time. We will send out additional announcements throughout the summer as needed, so keep your eyes open for these as well.
Once again, on behalf of everyone at ITP, we look forward to meeting the entire incoming class. Feel free to contact us at any time if you have questions along the way:
- George Agudow, ITP Administrative Director (george.agudow@nyu.edu) 212-998-1891
- Edward "Gordie" Gordon, Faculty & Student Services Coordinator (edward.gordon@nyu.edu) 212-998-1889
- Midori Yasuda, Admissions Coordinator (midori.yasuda@nyu.edu) 212-998-1882
Tisch School of the Arts Orientation Week
ITP's New Student Orientation will take place on Tuesday, August 26 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at ITP -- 721 Broadway (cross street Waverly Place); take the South elevators to the 4th floor.
During the ITP orientation we will discuss department policies and procedures, review the advisement and registration process, and highlight NYU-wide matters such as obtaining a photo ID, email account, etc. Some of this information is also provided below for your convenience.
In a nutshell, during the week of August 25, you will meet with an academic advisor, you will select a grouping of first-and-second-choice courses for the Fall semester that will suit your needs, and you will use NYU's automated system for registration in order to finalize your choices. We will review this process, in detail, during the ITP orientation meeting so do not worry too much about the specifics at this point. Rest assured that we have scheduled ample sections of the required courses so that everyone can can get what they need.
Dean Mary Schmidt-Campbell's Welcome is scheduled for Thursday, August 28 from 5 to 7 p.m. The Tisch Graduate Student Welcome Party is scheduled immediately afterward on Thursday, August 28 from 7 to 9 p.m. The TSOA Office of Student Affairs will be mailing you more information about the Tisch School of the Arts Orientation later this summer.
ITP Welcome and Welcome Back Party
On Wednesday, August 27, we hope to see you at our annual Welcome and Welcome Back Party. The party will be held at ITP (721 Broadway on the 4th floor) from 5 to 7 p.m. All new and returning students, as well as staff and faculty are invited. Please join us - it is a wonderful opportunity to get to know your classmates, as well as faculty and staff.
Departmental Advisement/Registration for Courses
Advisement for new students will begin on Tuesday, August. 26 after the orientation and continue into Wednesday, August 27. You must meet with an advisor in order to be cleared for registration.
Please contact ITP to schedule your personal advisement appointment as soon as possible. You may email itp.rsvp@nyu.edu (please enter "Advisement Appointment" in the subject line) -- or call at 212-998-1880 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. EST to make an appointment.
Keep in mind that your advisement appointment time slot has NOTHING to do with your actual registration time -- all advisement appointment times are equal, and there is no advantage in having one advisement date and time over another.
All incoming students will register on Thursday, August 28 at 11 a.m. Please don't worry about the details now. We will go over all of the registration procedures at the ITP orientation.

Grading/ITP Adopts a Pass-Fail System
Beginning in Fall 2008 ITP will move to a pass-fail grading system. This means that all ITP degree candidates starting in Fall (or Summer) 2008 will be impacted by this change. Students in their second year of study will remain with the letter-grade system. In Academic Year 09-10 all students will be under the pass-fail system.
The faculty has instituted this because they feel it is best suited to ITP's philosophy of collaboration over competition. An FAQ can be found here: http://itp.nyu.edu/help/Help/PassFail
Tuition & Fees
Most courses at ITP are 4 points (although internships can range from 2 to 6 points). Full-time students typically register for four courses (16 points). Costs for the 2008-09 academic year are:

You have until September 24 to pay the full tuition and fees for the Fall '08 semester only.

A partial refund may be possible if you drop during the first weeks of the semester. Please keep note of the following refund schedule:

If you foresee a problem paying your tuition within the registration period, please talk to your academic advisor or Midori Yasuda (212-998-1882 or midori.yasuda@nyu.edu.) Also, in this case please make an appointment to meet with John Brown, TSOA Office of Student Affairs (719 Broadway, 8th Floor, phone: 212-998-1900; e-mail: tisch.gradfinaid@nyu.edu), to discuss the problem so that appropriate arrangements can be made.
We will work with you if you are having financial problems, but if you wait too long to tell anyone, you may lose your student status for the Fall semester.
More information about all of this, payment options, etc., can be found on the NYU Bursar's website: http://www.nyu.edu/bursar
Financial Aid and Student Employment on Campus
US Citizens and permanent residents should have already received financial aid packages from NYU. If you have any problems with your financial aid, you may contact the TSOA Office of Student Affairs -- 212-998-1900 for assistance, or contact Midori Yasuda (212-998-1882 or midori.yasuda@nyu.edu.)
If you have been notified that you are eligible for a federal work-study job, you can apply for a position on the NYU campus through the NYU Wasserman Center for Career Development 133 E 13th Street, 2nd floor, phone 212-998-4730. You must register with the office in person in order to access their online jobs bulletin by bringing an NYU ID or your acceptance letter. Both work-study and non-work-study student jobs throughout the University are listed at their office. http://www.nyu.edu/careerdevelopment/
ITP also has several part-time work-study positions available assisting our technical staff. If you are interested in applying for one of these positions, please contact ITP technical administrator Rob Ryan directly via email with your resume (robert.ryan@nyu.edu). If you are in New York, Rob can start interviewing candidates now for these positions. Otherwise, an interview can be scheduled during orientation week.
Off-Campus Housing Office
If you are looking for an apartment and need to access the off-campus housing office's online database, please visit the website: http://www.nyu.edu/housing/offcampus.html. If you need your NetID to access the system, please contact Gordie (edward.gordon@nyu.edu or 212-998-1889).
Measles Vaccination/ Meningitis / Health Insurance
Later this summer you will receive notices from the University Health Center (UHC) concerning measles/mumps/rubella (MMR) vaccinations and meningitis. Please follow the instructions that apply to you; students who do not comply will be prevented from registering. This is a state law, so the University cannot exempt you from this requirement. You can find more information here: http://www.nyu.edu/nyuhc/immunization/
The University Health Center-Immunization Records office can answer questions about vaccinations. The phone number for UHC-Immunization Records is 212-443-1199.
All students need to be covered by health insurance. If you can show proof of coverage from an alternate source (i.e. current employment or family insurance), you can waive out of NYU's coverage.
We ask that you think carefully about choosing your student health insurance coverage, and strongly recommend a comprehensive health insurance package to ensure the highest amount of coverage. Please refer to the packet you will receive in July from the UHC-Student Health Insurance & Insurance Services, or you can contact UHC-Student Health Insurance & Insurance Services at 212-443-1020 or visit their website at http://www.nyu.edu/nyuhc/insurance.html.
