Note About Floor Hours: Late Night
ITP officially closes at Midnight, every night.
However, on occasion, the ER Staff may extend the Late Night privilege to the broader community working on the floor. This allows the floor to remain open (ER and Tools Shop closed) for up to an addition 2 hours. The floor must be closed down no later than 2:00AM.
Late Night is a privilege given to the ER Staff. They are not paid between official closing and 2AM. Their decision to stay late and extend that right is up to them alone and they should never be pressured into doing it. You should always PLAN on ITP closing at Midnight and be pleasantly surprised and gracious when an ER person is able to keep the floor open a little later.
The reason ITP closes at Midnight, is that based on many years of past experience, the community and the floor benefit from a period of down-time each night. It guarantees that the floor has a recovery period each day so that it can remain a safe and productive environment. The open, creative environment risks being unmanageable if we are open on a 24 hour basis. What's more, the quality of life and health of the community members would be at risk of burnout.
Production Area Resources and Policy:
Fall 2010
Post Production Resources in the Japanese Room:
- 4 Mac Video and Audio Editing Stations
- 1 Scanner on Edition Station 4
- 1 Network Drive for editing storage
Floor Policy:
Food and beverages are not permitted in any of the lab areas of the J-Room, the Physical Computing Area and Power Tools Shop
Cell phone calls should be taken/made outside of the Labs and classrooms.
Alcohol consumption is not allowed anywhere at ITP unless it is at an event sponsored by the Administration.
The staff is not responsible for any loss of data on classroom or floor computers due to corruption, student error, or as a result of Monday Morning Maintenance.
Do not tie up resources you are not actively using by leaving personal belongings at a computer or leaving a programmer, camera, or other peripheral device hooked up to the computer. If you need to leave the computer or work area for a short break, leave a note stating when you will return.
If you leave your work area for more than 30 minutes, the Tech Staff is authorized to remove anything you have connected or left at the computer to make resources available to other students. ITP Staff does not assume any responsibility for abandoned work areas or your personal belongings.
Lab Usage:
While there is no formal reservation policy at ITP, we do ask that you work no more than 4 hours at a computer to ensure that all students have an equal opportunity to make use of the resources at ITP:
Monday Morning Maintenance:
On Mondays from 9:00 am until Noon the production machines at ITP are updated, cleaned and checked for any problems. All student data is erased from the machines every Monday morning. Folders named "do not erase", "please keep", "save", etc. will not be saved. It is the responsibility of each student to back up his or her own work on a regular basis. It is suggested that you make multiple backups and to backup FREQUENTLY! For more suggestions on backups see: http://itp.nyu.edu/help/backup.html
Please store your files on the Networked Drive - the networked drive is not wiped on a weekly basis.

Equipment Room Procedures:
On Floor Checkouts:
NEW:
- SD Cards - Class 6 SDHC (You must supply your own for use with the still cams, xactis, zoom recorders, ets)
- AA Batteries (you must supply your own for zoom recorders, microphones, etc)
- Card Readers (There are card readers on the production stations for general use with your own SD or Flash Cards)
- USB A-B Cables (Students must provide their own USB A/B cables except for gallery projects)
- USB/Firewire Hard Drive (it's a good idea to get a drive for your backup purposes, transferring files on the floor or for showing work on the fly)
Off Floor Checkouts:
If you wish to reserve special checkout equipment for approved classes or independent study or to request an extended checkout, submit a request to the helpdesk at itp.helpdesk@nyu.edu at least 1 week prior to the date the equipment is needed for.
When borrowing equipment from ITP you assume all responsibility for the equipment and are responsible for any damage due to neglect; or in the event of theft or loss of unattended equipment.
A list of equipment available to students for checkout via the Equipment Room is available here ER Inventory.
Room Requests:
Room Requests can be made on the web at: http://itp.nyu.edu/rooms when classes are not scheduled and usually at least 1 week prior to the date needed. Any changes to a room's physical or technical layout must be put back to the way they were found. Room reservations are void if you do not show up within 30 minutes of your scheduled time. The full room reservation policy is available online at RoomPolicy.
Use of Public Spaces:
ITP tries to maintain a balance of development space and presentable gallery space on the floor at all times. While we want to encourage your eager development of new projects and pieces we do ask that you follow these simple rules:
- Please refrain from storing personal belongings, project materials, food, beverages, etc. on the tops of lockers. Any items found on locker tops will be discarded. Locker tops are cleared every Monday morning during MMM and as needed throughout the week.
- Please store only approved materials in designated areas: i.e., the shelves in Physical Computing or the shelves in the Long Lounge. All materials should be labeled with your name and contact information on the ORANGE Gaffers Tape in the Physical Computing Shop.
- If you would like to set up an installation on the floor temporarily for development, user testing or to demo to a class or audience, please contact Rob Ryan via the ITP Helpdesk (itp.helpdesk@nyu.edu) for setup. Please provide a time frame, dimensions, and tech needs list when emailing. All approved setups must include signage near the project explaining its intended purpose and its status.
- The use of harsh cehemicals, varnish and paint are not permitted on the floor
Only certain approved materials are permitted to be used on the floor - i.e, Gaffers Tape (NEVER DUCT TAPE), nails, screws, anchors, etc. Before doing anything on the floor please run it by Rob Ryan.
Reporting technical problems:
Technical problems are all reported to the helpdesk by sending a DETAILED email to: itp.helpdesk@nyu.edu. Please include the computer number, lab, software or relevant peripheral information when emailing the helpdesk as this aids in the troubleshooting process. Problems are addressed by the Tech Staff during the hours of 10am-7pm Monday thru Friday.
All questions, comments or problems should be sent to the helpdesk at itp.helpdesk@nyu.edu
