Design Director, Digital Home
Yahoo! is looking for a Design Director to lead the Yahoo! Digital
Home User Experience team, the team responsible for developing the
Yahoo!’s experience on TV and other connected devices. You will be
called upon to lead Yahoo! into this new and exciting product
category, as we create the best of next generation “Lean Back” user
experiences. Your goal will be to define the “gold standard” for user
interaction on TV, as we bring Yahoo!’s content, communities and
services to the big screen in the home. We expect the candidate to
have strong personal motivation, a passion for living room devices and
digital media, and the domain knowledge needed to help Yahoo! win in
this space.
The Design Director collaborates closely with product management,
visual design, and engineering teams, and collaborates closely with a
design team that consists of research, interaction and visual
designers.
Responsibilities include:
o Identify UI requirements, define project approach and scoping and
author the user experience standards strategy
o Set conceptual design and product direction based on field research
and functional requirements including an understanding of
cross-product issues and challenges
o Create and be accountable for the user interaction model, workflows,
information architecture, schematics, prototypes and interface
guidelines
o Work with user experience researchers to design and observe
usability studies and translates the findings into design improvements
o Collaborate with visual designers to refine the interactive
experience and retain a user focus
o Work hand in hand with web developers and engineers to deliver the
final product
o Manage project communication and asset exchange across
multidisciplinary team throughout all phases of projects
Minimum Qualifications
• College and/or advanced degree(s) in Computer Science, Graphic
Design, Industrial Design, HCI, Computer Related Design
• At least 8 years experience as a key member of a design team
participating in the complete product development life-cycle of
successfully launched consumer software, video, gaming, TV or other
relevant consumer electronics products
• Has strong analytical skills, written and verbal communication
skills, interpersonal skills
• Has strong empathic skills–understands how and why an interface
succeeds or fails and can spot likely problems in flow, layout, copy
or presentation before they go into production
• Values strong visual design and pays fanatical attention to the
details that make the difference between a mundane and a delightful
user experience
• Is able to quickly understand the constraints of a design problem,
identify the tradeoffs and communicate them to fellow designers
• Prototyping skills essential, such as Flash, Javascripting and
related animation tools
• Must have solid understanding of the demands of widescreen and HD
environments, as well as an understanding of web technologies,
HTML/CSS/Javascript
• Demonstrates technical expertise and connections with the design
community
• Ability to work independently as well as in cross-functional groups
• Works well under pressure and able to manage work to adhere to
critical project timelines in a fast-paced environment
Basic Skills
• Drive the process of turning product ideas into visualizations and
refining product direction through design • Practice various interface
design visualization techniques: concept models, process diagrams,
use-case models, storyboards, wireframes, functional specifications,
site maps, logic maps, etc. UML is a plus • Drive a user-centered
design process and support an environment where it happens •
Communicate clearly, and with sensitivity, about the value of
interaction design and help to explain its product value.
Desired Skills
• Prototyping abilities (Flash a plus)
• Practicing skills with Web technologies (XHTML/CSS/Javascript, SQL,
etc.)

Senior Designer, Digital Home Services
Yahoo! Inc. is looking for a Senior Designer to join the User
Experience & Design team within the Digital Home Services group. We
are creating the ultimate Yahoo! experience for TV connected devices.
For example, you will be responsible for designing interactive TV
related applications showing how Yahoo! services could enhance the
viewer’s TV experience. If you are smart, detail-oriented, enjoy
collaborating, willing to tackle challenging design problems and
passionate about creating compelling user experiences for TV we want
you to join the team.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Create user experiences that address business, brand and user
requirements, including the design and production of screen layouts,
color palettes, typography, and user interface elements. Experience in
designing applications for broadcast or television platforms is a
plus.
- Produce design specifications, storyboards, scenarios, design
prototypes
- Successfully follow a user-centered design process
- Work with user experience researchers to design product improvements
- Collaborate with interaction designers to refine the interactive
experience
- Work hand-in-hand with web developers and engineers to deliver the
final product
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s (preferably Master’s) degree in Graphic Design, Digital
Media Design or other visual arts
- Ideally 5+ years experience as a member of a design team
participating in the complete product development lifecycle of a
successfully launched web, TV or related application
- Must demonstrate outstanding design talent and creativity
- Must have a solid understanding of user-centered design principles,
analytical and conceptual design skills
- Have excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to work independently as well as in cross-functional groups
- Works well under pressure and able to manage work to adhere to
critical project timelines in a fast-paced environment
- Must have solid understanding of graphic design and web or TV design
principles with working knowledge of Flash
- Passion for developing innovative interfaces for the TV/broadcast
space
