MMORPG.gov: Helping the Government Considered as an Online Game Speaker: Anil Dash

Anil Dash is the Founder and Director of Expert Labs, a new non-profit that helps regular people share their ideas with policy makers in the U.S. federal government. Dash will discuss how and why the interface between what government needs and what techies know has been so bad, and how to make it better.

How does Expert Labs work?

* We ask policy makers what questions they need answered to make better decisions. * We help the technology community create the tools that will get those answers. * We prompt the scientific & research communities to provide the answers that will make our country run better. * Each community provides its own unique expertise. And the end result is a government that uses the web not just to talk to citizens, but to listen to them.

(Clay says: If you have any interest in Open Source, non-profits, the current administration or government generally, Anil is at the forefront of what’s possible.)

Tax Filing Time – CINTAX Access and OISS On-Line Workshops

March 23rd, 2010

ATTENTION INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS:

TAX FILING TIME and CINTAX ACCESS

All F-1, F-2, J-1 and J-2 individuals are required to file tax forms with the U.S.government’s Internal Revenue Service [IRS], even if the person did not work in the U.S. Please take the time now to review this information at: http://www.nyu.edu/life/student-life/international-students-and-scholars/legal-matters/taxes.html

The OISS tax section includes resources, forms, and tax treaty information.

The CINTAX tax filing software is available at: http://www.nyu.edu/life/student-life/international-students-and-scholars/legal-matters/taxes/cintax-filing-your-taxes.html

CINTAX is free to NYU international students, alumni and faculty and is designed for federal tax filing. The software program does not provide assistance with filing state tax forms (such as New York or New Jersey).

Do note that the OISS is pleased to provide these resources, but OISS staff are unable to provide individual tax guidance.

OISS ON-LINE WORKSHOPS

The OISS offers three mandatory workshops for key immigration benefits: re-entry to the U.S., off-campus employment for F-1 students, and F-1 post-completion optional practical training.

At this time, certain components of the workshops are in the process of being updated.

Therefore, it is very important that you first read the workshop page before viewing any on-line workshop for important guidance.

The workshop page is http://www.nyu.edu/life/student-life/international-students-and-scholars/legal-matters/workshops.html

Thank you for your kind attention to this matter.

Staging Spaces Update

March 23rd, 2010

Please see the latest Staging assignments: http://itp.nyu.edu/help/Facilities/Staging

There were some minor changes after an attempt to squeeze in a few more projects.

There are 54 projects staged this semester!

All in all there is not much in terms of available space left after this. Some spaces have not received a table so we’ll have to work out a work-around, with either available carts or kiosk stands.

The venue is closed to new submissions and we’ll deal with any last minute requests on a first come, first serve basis, provided we can support the request.

Thanks,

Rob

PComp Area

March 23rd, 2010

The PComp area has been re-organized so as to make more productive space and facilities available to students.

The PComp area at present is a mess with abandoned projects or projects/materials left at various stages of development. All projects and materials that are not necessary for current development must be taken home or we will dispose of them.

Remember, workbenches must be left clear for all to use.

If you have projects that are actively being worked on please see me about storing them.

Your co-operation is necessary for everyone to share the available workspace and facilities.

Thanks

John

ITP Alum Britta Riley on ?Comedy of the Commons: Mass Collaboration for the Environment (Kinda) Works?

Britta Riley of the Windowfarms Project http://www.windowfarms.org and R&D-I-Y (Research and Develop it yourself) talks about ground-level issues with founding a mass collaboration online. R&D-I-Y is a open design methodology focused on proposing, testing, refining and publishing do-it-yourself solutions to physical/logistical environmental problems. The Windowfarms Project is the fast-growing alpha test case with 3500+ users worldwide attempting to collectively develop a viable new hyperlocal food supply. Thousands of urbanites around the world are building, testing, and refining vertical hydroponic vegetable gardens out of reappropriated materials in city apartment windows and contributing to the project online. Building this movement has meant running into a lot of interesting problems related to UI/UX, intellectual property, ethics, economics, funding, management and the definition of opensource in non-software applications.

Bio: Britta Riley is an artist and social entrepreneur. Her work plays with current structures for innovation in our culture and celebrates the wisdom of ordinary people. Her work has been shown at the Whitney and MOMA. Her design firm with partner Rebecca Bray consults for museums and exhibit designers on interactive public participation. She is a research associate and former resident at Eyebeam. She is a graduate of NYU?s ITP program (?07) and St. John?s College (?00).

Staging Space Assignments

March 22nd, 2010

While we haven’t cleared and prepped all of the Staging spaces yet, you can view location assignments here: http://itp.nyu.edu/help/Facilities/Staging

We will finish clearing out and prepping areas of the floor tomorrow morning. Therefore, you can expect to begin setup anytime after 6PM tomorrow, Tuesday, March 23rt.

There is a shortage of tables for all of these projects (nearly 50 of them) so when necessary, you can expect to work off a 1 or 2 kiosk stands.

If you have reconsidered your need for a space, please let me know so that it can be reassigned quickly!

Best,

Rob
