Currently, Defne Ayas is the Associate Curator at PERFORMA, a non-profit organization dedicated to research, development, and presentation of new visual art performance. (www.performa-arts.org) Prior to joining PERFORMA in June 2004, Ayas worked as the Education and New Media Programs Coordinator at the New Museum and co-organized numerous new media-related programs including artist presentations, performances, and exhibitions including "Airborne" (2005), "Lansing Dreiden" (2004), "Fresh" and "Transmission" Series (2004), and "One Block Radius" by Glowlab (2004). Ayas' recent independent projects include "This May Be What Parallel Play Looks Like", Sculpture Center, NYC (2005), "public.exe: Public Execution", Exit Art,
NYC, (www.exitart.org/public.exe), 'Make Nice" and "Democracy is Fun?", White Box, NYC (www.whiteboxny.org/democracyisfun) (with curators Michele Thursz and Anne Ellegood). Her projects have been featured and/or reviewed by New York Times, Art in America, Village Voice, TimeOut and Flavorpill. Ayas received her M.P.S. from the Interactive Telecommunications Program at New York University in 2003, and is on the Advisory Board of CCA in Kabul, Afghanistan.
