Please post your questions about platform deep dive assignment.

  • anil: i'm sorry but i think i may need your help in finding a platform to do my deep-dive. most of the ones i can think of are taken.and thanks:)
  • Madoka: You mentioned that practical considerations would be only about technical matters in developing content for that platform. So what we are supposed to write is how to developcontent for it, what we can/cannot do for it, and what are pros and cons of it, right? I just wanted to make sure that again.
  • Mr. Howard Tiersky: I agree with what you said. It may not be *strictly* only technical considerations, however technical issuesare certainly very practical considerations.

>> yes, that's right. Practical matters may be technical or other logistical considerations>> -HT

  • Cat: Are we also supposed to do research into what is currently happening? ie. If I am doing mobile phones, should I go into the current ways that content is arriving on this platform? Also, since a mobile phone can also capture content, can I go into that discussion as well?

>>Yes, your discussion should be current, but dont feel obligated to covere everything about mobile phones. There are a variety of technology platforms associated with mobile phones, you may want to pick one. W.r.t. capturing content, my initial inclination would be not to focus on this. The emphasis is on teh broadcasting of content. So I would not imagine covering general photo and video capabilities of a phone are relevant unless they somemhow relate to an interactive broadcasting platform. >> -HT

  • Tim: what about MythTV? It's an open source, completely free DIY version of Tivo. I know it's not mainstream as far as PVRs go, but I would argue that studying something is part of a mainstreaming process. (I'm not 100% sure I want to do my DD on MythTV, just exploring my options.)

>>I would not argue vehemently against if you are passionate about it...>> -HT

  • Tae: I am currently doing my deep dive on Windows Media Center Edition. Indeed, this is a type of entertainment hub like TiVo, but built into the computer (desktop) or game console (Xbox 360). Then, in terms of contents, I have choice between the normal broadcasting TV or games. In this case, should I examine the already existing contents, or should I come with a newer contents that I may think that it would be efficient and successful for such platform?

>> For this assignment, don’t feel obligated to come up with brand new ideas for content. The objective here is to demonstrate understanding of what it takes to publish content to this platform. You are free, of course, to come up with examples of original content, but the focus should not be on new creative ideas for programming, the focus of this assignment is on the *how* of developing content for this platform, preparing it, distributing it, etc. The concept pitch due at the end of the semester is the opposite—much more about “what” content to develop. The focus should be from the perspective of someone creating content. So, its definitely not about explaining how the DSP chips in the box handle decoding of MPEG video streams…content creators don’t need to know how a DSP chip works. What they do need to know, however, is that the box may only be capable of a certain size video stream, for example. So think about your audience being creative users who want to develop and create programming…what do they need to know in order to be able to use the platform.>> -HT

  • Madoka: For this deep dive assignment, shall we post the key isssues around developing for platforms on the "Deep Dive signup" page, or shall we creat a new link on the side bar for it?
