What is a Video Podcast

A video podcast is a episodic list of videos, usually created by users. Most of the video in video podcasts takes the form of a show and even include intros. Video podcasts are also sometimes referred to as video blogs. Because video podcasts are episodic they utilize RSS so that users may subscribe via a aggregator of their choice and be notified when the podcast has been updated with new episodes. Currently the most common and easiest way of subscribing and managing video podcasts is via iTunes.

Examples of Video Podcast

The types of video podcast available range from personal/journal podcast to professional news video podcast like CNN.

Subscribing to a video blog

In order to subscribe to a video podcast you need to first find the podcast's RSS feed. On the website of the video podcast, most RSS feeds are identified with this type of logo.

Make sure you have the correct RSS feed because this also the same icon for text feeds and audio podcasts, the internet community has yet to come up with a unique logo to identify video podcast.

In iTunes click the “ADVANCED” option and click “Subscribe to podcast” then enter the url of the RSS feed into the box. iTunes will begin downloading the first episode of the video podcasts.

You can also find and subscribe to video podcasts in the iTunes music store. When in the iTunes store click the podcast link from the main menu. From there you can browse the entire collection of audio and video podcast, video podcast are noted with video in the title or the tv screen icon.

Watching a Video Podcast

If you subscribe to a video podcast in iTunes you can simply click the title of the episode you want to watch and iTunes will launch it's video player. If your watching from the video podcasts website you can click the play button from there.

Creating a Video Podcast

In this section I am assuming that the video has been created, therefore i will not explain how to edit the video but how to prepare the RSS feeds, how to submit the feeds to iTunes and what to check to make sure the video is ipod compatible.

Easy Way - The easiest way to create a video blog is by using video upload sites like Youtube. By going this route you'll have a RSS feed but you'll be locked out of iTunes and the ipod because most video upload sites encode they're video into FLV (flash video format).

Another easy alternative is simply to post links to new video in your website. This also locks you out of iTunes and the ipod and any other aggregator and users will never know when your show has been updated.

Hard, but best way - Okay you've got a collection of video, how do you turn them into a video podcast accesible from iTunes and ipod?

Step 1. Setup blogging software

The first would be to set up blogging software somewhere on your webserver, you could create a podcast with just a RSS feed but your subscribers would not have any other way of discovering your podcast unless your featured in the iTunes podcast directory.

Step 2. Creating your first entry

Once you have your blogging environment setup, I'm assuming Word Press, your ready to add your first entry. The first step would be to select new entry from the main navigation. Enter the title and body of the entry. In the entry box link to an audio or video file in a post, and use the FULL URL of the file (http and everything), then eventually that file will appear in your RSS feed as an enclosure.

Once you've followed the step above and your video is formated for the ipod, you should be able take the RSS feed created by Word Press and subscribe to your new video podcast in iTunes.

Alternatives to iTunes

I've mostly mentioned using itunes as the way main way of subscribing to and managing podcast but there are some alternatives. The main 2 alternatives i've found are:

Democaracy TV
