Designing Interactions

Proposed model for designing interactive systems.

User driven design: A starting point when thinking about the process of creating new interactive projects.
This is by no means the only process but you should know about it.

1. Design Research

  • Field observation, Qualitative vs. quantitative research, choose your media for observation, be a fly on the wall.
  • Aggregating data
  • Competitive analysis: what is out there already

2. Determine program

  • Determine objectives and design criterias
  • Formulate concepts to work around

3. Define user personas & profiles

4. Scenarios
Write fictional scenarios of usages

5. Features definition & Requirements

6. System details & sketches

  • Conceptual diagrams (the big idea)
  • Block diagrams (represent each different section and component of the project, includes content maps)
  • Wireframes for interfaces
  • Workflow diagrams for the user experience

7. Mood boards, look & feel and art direction

8. Technical plan
Select technologies, detail each step of your system so you can start building, acquire necessary equipment and components.

9. Prototype building, implementation

  • Electronics
  • Programming
  • Materials

10. User testing

11. Go back as far as needed, review prototype, apply changes

12. Repeat 10 and 11 as needed.
