Preparing For the Second Half of the SemesterThis time of the semester, people tend to be more careless about the shop. From here on out, it only gets more crowded, so here are a few things we'd like you to remember: There will be a thorough shop cleaning at the end of the semester. You will have to take everything home over the break. Prepare for this by taking anything unnecessary home whenever you can.
And most importantly: HAVE RESPECT FOR ONE ANOTHER. Don't take anything that's not yours. If you borrow, ask before borrowing, and leave a note saying thanks, so the person doesn't forget and think it's stolen. Help each other remember where things are, and watch out for each other's stuff. Treat everyone's project and materials with the care you treat your own. January 24, 2007, at 01:42 PM

A quick announcement about Arduino 5 and OSX 10.3.9We have found that there is an issue with OSX version 10.3.9 and version 5 of the Arduino IDE in that they do not get along. The java used in 10.3.9 is incompatible with version 5. The long and the shot of it all is that if you are running the older operating system, you will have two choices. 1) upgrade your system software which will automatically upgrade your Java. OR 2) use version 4 of the Arduino IDE. The difference between the two versions is not enough to make a noticeable difference in your ability to complete your labs and to complete your projects. If you are unable to run version 5 on your machine, try version 4. If you're running OSX 10.3.9 and Arduino 0004 and using an Arduino NG, you need to download the latest OSX drivers from http://www.FTDIchip.com. The drivers that come with Arduino 0004 will not work with the USB -to-serial chip on the Arduino NG. You need the version 2.1.6 drivers for OSC (not the Intel drivers) or later. The earlier drivers wull produce a Java PortInUseError. New Shop StaffJohn Duane from the tech staff has been shifting his responsibilities over the last semester and the summer to include more shop-related duties. In the fall, he'll have a desk in the shop and be primarily in charge of managing the space and equipment in the shop, from the laptops to the power tools. New on the Shop Site: New Shop SpaceThe wall between the firmware lab and the shop has been removed to make one large space. We also made some new rolling tables, so the whole space will be one. The new arrangement makes it possible for students to work on all phases of a project, from physical construction to media production (albeit on laptops) to logistics meetings. There will also be a projector and screen in the space for projection experiments, demonstrations, and whatever else a projector is useful for. The former firmware laptops will be spread around the space and moved as needed. to:

We're switching to using the Arduino microcontroller modules in the intro phys comp class. http://www.arduino.cc for more. Benefits: open-source, cross-platform, simple C-syntax language, USB programming and serial interface, cheap, and possible to build yourself. We'll still have the PIC tools around and on the shop laptops for anyone who wants to use them, of course. Shop To Be Empty By August 1As we announced at the end of the spring semester, and again a few weeks later, we will be emptying the shop in a couple weeks to do some construction. This means that EVERYTHING needs to leave the shop. No one can store anything there during the construction period. Many of you have stuff there from your summer projects, and some from the spring still, even. When we say everything, we mean it. Please start getting your stuff out now so that it's all gone by August 1. Though we have sometimes been considerate of people's storage needs in past summers, we cannot do that this summer, because of the construction. So please get it out now so we don't have to throw it out on August 1. to:

Physical Computing
Carlyn Maw:
(:tableend:) Physical Computing is an approach to learning how humans communicate through computers that starts by considering how humans express themselves physically. In this course, we take the human body as a given, and attempt to design computing applications within the limits of its expression. If you're using the physical computing shop at ITP, welcome. This site is the info site for the shop and a portal for other resources. If you're new to the shop, please read through all of the Policy and Safety sections of this site, and attend a shop safety tutorial before you start working in the shop (it's required). New on the Shop Site: The physical computing shop is closed at the moment, but will be open for business as of Wednesday, September 7 Shop To Be Empty By August 1As we announced at the end of the spring semester, and again a few weeks later, we will be emptying the shop in a couple weeks to do some construction. Thanks, What's here: Shop Announcements Things you should be aware of.
