Preparing For the Second Half of the Semester

This time of the semester, people tend to be more careless about the shop. From here on out, it only gets more crowded, so here are a few things we'd like you to remember:

There will be a thorough shop cleaning at the end of the semester. You will have to take everything home over the break. Prepare for this by taking anything unnecessary home whenever you can.

  • PAY ATTENTION to what you've got, and where you put it.
  • LABEL all of your stuff with the colored tape, with your name and email, so we can find you if it needs to move.
  • TAKE TIME when setting up and cleaning up to note everything you took out of your bin, and are putting back. Write it down if you're forgetful.
  • USE YOUR LOCKER if it's valuable.
  • WATCH OUT FOR EACH OTHER. Take note of what your classmates are doing when you're in the lab together. Talk to each other. Sometimes the simple act of conversation helps you remember what someone else was doing when you talked, and you can help them remember what they misplaced.
  • TAKE THINGS HOME if you're not using them. They're safest there. This means ALL projects, Stirling engines, cardboard, etc. which you've already shown in class, or won't touch until the end of the semester.

And most importantly:

HAVE RESPECT FOR ONE ANOTHER. Don't take anything that's not yours. If you borrow, ask before borrowing, and leave a note saying thanks, so the person doesn't forget and think it's stolen. Help each other remember where things are, and watch out for each other's stuff. Treat everyone's project and materials with the care you treat your own.

A quick announcement about Arduino 5 and OSX 10.3.9

We have found that there is an issue with OSX version 10.3.9 and version 5 of the Arduino IDE in that they do not get along. The java used in 10.3.9 is incompatible with version 5.

The long and the shot of it all is that if you are running the older operating system, you will have two choices. 1) upgrade your system software which will automatically upgrade your Java. OR 2) use version 4 of the Arduino IDE. The difference between the two versions is not enough to make a noticeable difference in your ability to complete your labs and to complete your projects.

If you are unable to run version 5 on your machine, try version 4.

If you're running OSX 10.3.9 and Arduino 0004 and using an Arduino NG, you need to download the latest OSX drivers from http://www.FTDIchip.com. The drivers that come with Arduino 0004 will not work with the USB -to-serial chip on the Arduino NG. You need the version 2.1.6 drivers for OSC (not the Intel drivers) or later. The earlier drivers wull produce a Java PortInUseError.

New Shop Staff

John Duane from the tech staff has been shifting his responsibilities over the last semester and the summer to include more shop-related duties. In the fall, he'll have a desk in the shop and be primarily in charge of managing the space and equipment in the shop, from the laptops to the power tools. His advice and experience have been invaluable this summer, and it's going to make things go much smoother to have him there regularly.

Todd Holoubek and Carlyn Maw will continue as physical computing residents this year. In addition, they'll both be teaching sections of the Intro Phys Comp class. Scott Fitzgerald and Greg Shakar will be returning to round out the Intro Phys Comp faculty list for this fall.

New on the Shop Site:

New Shop Space

The wall between the firmware lab and the shop has been removed to make one large space. We also made some new rolling tables, so the whole space will be one. The new arrangement makes it possible for students to work on all phases of a project, from physical construction to media production (albeit on laptops) to logistics meetings. There will also be a projector and screen in the space for projection experiments, demonstrations, and whatever else a projector is useful for. The former firmware laptops will be spread around the space and moved as needed.

We're switching to using the Arduino microcontroller modules in the intro phys comp class. http://www.arduino.cc for more. Benefits: open-source, cross-platform, simple C-syntax language, USB programming and serial interface, cheap, and possible to build yourself. We'll still have the PIC tools around and on the shop laptops for anyone who wants to use them, of course. Long term plans for the Arduino platform involve a PIC-based version, so Microchip won't disappear from ITP for a while.

Shop Construction Begins

Thanks to all those who've come to get your stuff from the shop. As I mentioned several times before, we are doing major renovations in there this summer. The dumpsters arrive tomorrow, and we will be throwing anything remaining out. So if you have ANYTHING left, come get it TODAY.

The demolitions crew arrives Monday, by which time we will have cleared not only personal items, but also tables, cabinets, etc. The shop will be closed from then until school opens again.

Thanks,
Tom and your shop team, John, Carlyn, and Todd

to:

New Shop Space

The wall between the firmware lab and the shop has been removed to make one large space. We also made some new rolling tables, so the whole space will be one. The new arrangement makes it possible for students to work on all phases of a project, from physical construction to media production (albeit on laptops) to logistics meetings. There will also be a projector and screen in the space for projection experiments, demonstrations, and whatever else a projector is useful for. The former firmware laptops will be spread around the space and moved as needed.

Shop To Be Empty By August 1

As we announced at the end of the spring semester, and again a few weeks later, we will be emptying the shop in a couple weeks to do some construction. This means that EVERYTHING needs to leave the shop. No one can store anything there during the construction period. Many of you have stuff there from your summer projects, and some from the spring still, even.

When we say everything, we mean it. Please start getting your stuff out now so that it's all gone by August 1. Though we have sometimes been considerate of people's storage needs in past summers, we cannot do that this summer, because of the construction. So please get it out now so we don't have to throw it out on August 1.

On Monday morning starting at 10 AM, we make a full cleaning of the shop. Please take home anything that you are not using in a final project between now and May 10th. Anything that is not clearly labeled with orange tape with your name and contact info will be thrown out.

There will be a second cleaning of the shop immediately following the show on the evening of May 10th. EVERYTHING must go home then or it will be thrown out to prepare for summer maintenance. Anything you take home with you now is one less thing you will have to take on the 10th.

Shop Cleaning Monday May 24

On Monday morning starting at 10 AM, we make a full cleaning of the shop. Please take home anything that you are not using in a final project between now and May 10th. Anything that is not clearly labeled with orange tape with your name and contact info will be thrown out.

There will be a second cleaning of the shop immediately following the show on the evening of May 10th. EVERYTHING must go home then or it will be thrown out to prepare for summer maintenance. Anything you take home with you now is one less thing you will have to take on the 10th.

Shop Cleanup Fall 2005

Many people have asked for clarification about when materials in the shop and the floor need to go home. The bottom line: we need everything out before cleaning up for next term -- which will happen on Jan. 9.

ITP is open for business from 9 - 5 on Thur., Dec. 22 and from 10 - 4 on Fri., Dec. 23 -- materials may be claimed then. After that NYU closes for the Winter Holiday period -- reopening on Wed., Jan. 4 when we return to a 9 - 6 schedule.

For those who can't make it during business hours, the floor will be open for materials pick-up from 5 PM to 8 PM tonight, Dec. 22.

In any case nothing will be thrown out before Jan. 8 -- after that anything that is still here is at risk of being thrown out prior to the start of the spring term on Jan. 17.
