I thought it would also be interesting to also monitor wave motion and direction and tide information over time (and less expensive...).

Applied Microsystems TWG-12 Tide and wave Guage:

There are actually two sensors contained within this guage, one is a high resolution quartz pressure sensor, and the other is a temperature sensor.( I also think that the sensor could map the contour of the sea bed surface if dragged along the bottom...Difference in height = Difference in pressure).
