Metropolis and Mental Life- Georg Simmel February 28, 2009

This week’s reading was an essay by late 19th century sociologist Georg Simmel and late 20th century/early 21st century architect William Mitchell. I ended up focusing more on Simmel because I thought his essay provided a better foundation for discussion than the excerpt from Mitchell’s .  However, I also appreciated Mitchell’s thoughtful and experimental foray into the subject matter of internet communication’s hand in shaping of the late 20th, early 21st century urban experience.  I found the cartoon introducing the chapter to be  amusing, as well his last rhetorical question (at least to him): “Who shall be our Hippodamos?”
