Toy musical instrument with Asian feature.
This instrument will give children the opportunities to explore different kinds of Asian beats and stress so that children can observe skills while playing a drum.

Personal Statement:Unlike other musical instruments, this drum is more instinctive. Even though those who hardly know notes can play with this drum.
Background:While doing market researches, we realized that eToy Musical Instrumentf for children lacked of sound quality and interactivities. Thus we applied them to Japanese traditional Taiko drum.

Audience:3 to 8 year-old children
User Scenario:Play Mode:
(When children beat the drum, they will hear drum sounds and LEDs feedback. Also while playing they can record their playing and replay it later.)
- Children can play this drum by themselves at home.
- Since this is a portable drum, they can bring it to friends\' house.

Lesson Mode:
(By following blinking LEDs and sounds, children can learn Asian beats. After lesson mode, children will get suitable cue in order to play by themselves.)
- Children will get three different kinds of lessons that are pre-programmed into a drum so that they can learn Asian beats visually and audibly.

Future Plan:
- Children who want to play a drum as a game can use ggame modeh which is like the game, gSimon Saidh.
- They can play a drum with their friends through the Internet. In addition, they can upload their own drum sounds online and share it with friends.
- Since physical movement is important for Japanese drum, children will use the website to learn how to dance when they play a drum.
Technical System Description:- Using three pic chip 18F452.
- Piezo sensor is set under the surface of the drum skin, and sends the value to the MIDI velocity. When the sensor sends its value, a shiftregister let LEDs blink.
- For lesson mode, we composed three kinds of beats which we learned from Japanese drum player, Hiro. Those sounds correspond with LEDs as well.
- For sound cue, we hacked CD player and connected to a pic chip.

Conclusions:We will do user-test with children to get feedback from them and evaluate a drum accordingly.
