INTOUCH is an interactive video installation. The video footage is from Tanzania. The installation aims to increase the awareness in individuals to reach out to underprivileged communities.
Interactivity in installations (when used for the right and essential reasons) provides a tool to enhance the explanation of an idea by connecting the physical part of the experience with the emotional, mental and spiritual parts. “INTOUCH” is part of a 3 separate interactive video installation project concentrating on the problems of water sanitation in underprivileged communities around the world. By using interactivity it aims to increase our awareness and show the reflections of our choices to reach out to these communities or to avoid them.

Personal Statement:I would like to show that helping is not as hard as we think. It has been my experience that sometimes it is much easier to connect with or to make an underprivileged child smile. In the conditions that they live they value the personal connection and attention much more than any of the children that are used to having expensive toys. In a way these children are smiling and reaching out to all of us as much as they can and if we put a little bit of effort we can take away the scrim that separates us and reach to them. I believe that there is so much we can learn from them. We can only provide the tools for survival and they can enlighten us about the simple truth of existence, happiness and values.
Background:The video footage of this installation is from Tanzania. My thesis concentrates on areas that have water scarcity and sanitation problems and Tanzania is one of these places. This footage was taken by Matthew Culliford at the Miracle Corners of the World.
User Scenario:On the bottom corner of the projection there is a casted child hand. When the user approaches the installation he can see that there are children but it is a dark video with pixels constantly changing place with the ones next to them. So they can\'t really understand what the video is. If the user reaches out and touches the hand the pixels slowly find their own color and the footage of children from Tanzania becomes visible. In the video the children are constantly smiling and waving at the user. I think making the user physically reach towards the kids can create a good representation of reaching out. As the user pulls his hand back the pixels go back to their dark quality.
Technical System Description:This projection installation uses q-touch sensors which send out serial data to communicate with Max/MSP/Jitter.
