| A user-directed cinematic experience of a nonLinear narrative. |
Independent Study with Douglas Rushkoff
\"In a Painting\" is a nonlinear narrative that explores the intimate relationship between two people, caught in the inertia of their shared histories, and how the tragedy of one empowers the other to escape from her own pattern of reptitive cycling through unreconciled memories. The project does so by allowing the viewer to direct his own telling of the story thru a physcial interface that existsm within the story as well. |

| Personal Statement: | I hope to combine my past strengths with the new technology and ideas about art ITP has afforded me to create a thought provoking and empassioned user experience that yeilds a physical cinematic experience that is user-directed. |
| Background: | In this project i have drawn upon my theoretical background from my undergrad theatre and visual studies major\'s focus on performance art and most specifically the writings and works of Hal Foster (e.g. the Return of the Real and The Anti-Aesthetic: Essays on Postmodern Culture)--to name a few. I am also utilizing my background in playwriting. |
| Audience: | anyone who enjoys piecing together a non linear narrative. short-film buffs. |
| User Scenario: | The interface is a fragmented physical representation of the painting that the screenplay departs from. An lcd screen is embedded within the the interface. the user presses various buttons nestled throughout the interface inorder to cue up video sequences that tell a small part of the story. the sequence cued is directly related to the area of the painting / interface where the button was pressed. |
| Technical System Description: | i wrote this screenplay and have created an interactive reorganizable storyboard that allows a viewer navigate the story using video, software, and a physical computing interface. MAX/MSP is used to read info in from a pic chip relaying button-pressing events and then cues up corresponding video sequences. |
| Project References, Research and Literature: | Mnemonic by Theatre d\' Complicite, The Street of Crocodiles by Theatre d\' Complicite, Return of the Real by Hal Foster, Compulsive Beauty, The Emotional Brain, Mauve Desert, cinematic inpsiration: Obsessive Becoming, Der Krieger und Die Kaiserin, Memento, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind |
| Conclusions: | Both the screenplay for the video and interface are built on the idea of object memory, the notion that an object can house and trigger a network memories, of pathways that lead to other pathwyas, taking seemingly random and often nonlinear turns. I hope to create an that is enhanced, explained, and mirrored by such an interface and structure, engaging the viewer not just through its narrative structure and visual aesthetics, but also through its means of \'telling\'--user-directed sequence cueing. |
