GridLockd! is a large urban game where four teams compete to capture as many grid positions within a half hour on a city-based game board.
Loosely based on Othello, which is a two player game of tiles, these four teams must be the first to photograph as many unique semacodes placed in 36 city intersections. This project is meant to display how semacodes, camera phones, ad-hoc groups, and social dynamics are effected under time pressure.

Personal Statement:Semacodes represent an easy way to create games and spread information with the use of a cameraphone.
Background:I\'ve been interested in how cell phone applications will effect interpersonal communication as cameraphones become ubiquitous.
Audience:Socially-mobile active camera phone users with a passion for gaming and large urban games. Fans of Othello, Go!, and Reversi amy be interested in testing the limits of semacodes and how they can be used creatively to relay information, location, and urls.
User Scenario:12 people compete in 4 groups of 3 people. The game board is made up of 36 unique semacodes placed within intersection points on a 5 block by 5 block city grid. Using their camera phone to photograph a semacode, the first team to send it to semacode@gridlockd.net will win possession of the intersection. Whichever team captures a point first claims the intersection. Another team can claim that intersection by capturing two surrounding intersections. The winner is determined by the team who captures the most points within 30 minutes. Participants will communicate to fellow team members by using their unique channelled Walkie-Talkies. During the 30-minute game, participants will receive an dynamically updated image of the game board, point totals and remaining game time via MMS messages every minute. Teams may also receive announcements from the GridLockd! game master via SMS.
Technical System Description:The system is designed for MMS picture messages of semacodes to be sent to a designated email address. If a semacode is sent properly, the system will update the database and accordingly send out a confirmation email to the sender, along with updating the score and game board. Teams will receive updates every minute on teams score, time, and a dynamically created game board.
