little brother v.1

little brother

Sean Salmon

I am creating a system that allows people to use photographs to construct contextual maps of surveillance geographies from a semi-personal scientific perspective. The photographs are not composed by the ‘photographer’ but are initiated by the system when the user entering a zone that is under surveillance.

Description

Pervasive Technology and communication networks are changing our perception of physical space and the constructed environment in ways as profound as the initial mapping of the globe.
In 1969 the first picture of the earth taken from space appeared in Life Magazine. This whole view earth, shown without boundaries or borders that had defined mapmaking since the beginning, created the understanding of our physical world that map-like representations could not.
We need a new picture that shows the whole view of the spatio-technological layer. I am going to begin the construction of that new picture, beginning as the first cartographers had, with the boundaries of these technological spatial constructs.
Mobile Phones, GPS, WiFi, RFID,Surveillance Cameras and Environmental Sensor Networks all create zones in real space that fall under their control. This technological control contains specific boundaries beyond which the technological influence is not felt. It is my intention to conduct a series of experiments and investigations with the above technologies to help in the creation of a map of this spatio-technological layer.

Personal Statement

The creation of architectural space has long been defined by the constructions of walls and enclosure. My interests in design and my interest in making things led me to an education in architecture. My architectural education and subsequent work experience has changed my understanding of architecture from one of the construction of materiality, the building, to one of space, everything but the materiality.
The very first maps made by explorers showed clearly defined edges of where sea met land, and then fuzzy boundaries where unknown and unexplored land went on beyond the visible horizon. It is the fuzzy zone where the known meets the unknown that my interest lays.

Audience

Explorers of urban space. Those with an interest in creating documents of their surroundings. People interested in maps and mapping

User Scenario

A user explors the city wearing the little brother device. The little brother device is built upon a mobile phone with a camera, GPS and an Internet connection. When the user gets within a zone surrounding a point of interest images with rich metadata are recorded and uploaded to the network. Later the user can access the images, and create maps with theimages, of her explorations. Several users can share their maps and images to generate group mappings and create new social interactions with physical space.
