Description

As a new platform to tell a story, I use MOO (Multi-User Dungeon Object Oriented) that is an online text based virtual world. By using this platform, readers can play around inside of the story and talk with other users. Writers can collaborate with other writers and get feedback from readers real time. The story will be grown by itself.

Personal Statement

How can digitally written contents differ from traditionally written contents? Can digitalized books be more interactive with writers and readers? I'd like to answer those questions from the paper magazine editor/writer's point of view.

Background

The Internet-driven writings, such as "Densha-Otoko" from the Japanese largest BBS and "The L Word" from Fanlib, lowered the border between a writer and readers. Readers have become a important part of publishing. This new trend starts changing the content of writing.

Audience

Writers and readers who love to write in digital format.

User Scenario

A writer writes a story in MOONIVERSE. When s/he wants to get a feedback from readers, s/he can speak with them in this virtual space and add their idea into its story. Each scene writers created is saved as an object, so that other writers can re-use its setting as they like. All stories in MOONIVERSE can connect and intersect with other writers' story. Readers can change reading point of view from one story to another, or one character to another.

Implementation

We used existing MOO server, and redesigned its function for our purpose. The interface is Java applet so that users can login through browser.

Conclusion

I as a writer, found that this writing style changed my writing style. I noticed that I used to write in 2D mind-set, but for MOONIVERSE I wrote a story in 3D mind-set. I believe that this changing will change writers' output significantly.
