Description
Why does the computer still lack the immediacy of a sketchpad? By coupling the powerful, expressive possibilities of paper and the image analysis capabilities of the computer, a new kind of expressive visual medium is possible. Test.
Personal Statement
My work has always searched for alternative human interfaces to the computer. We've too long obsessed over the keyboard and the mouse, and the continued reliance on real world metaphors has often hindered the development of new forms of interaction. As an artist I wish the computer to work in accordance with my process and not the other way around as often is the case with commercial software packages.
Background
Very little work or research has been done to develop the kind of interface I propose, but I have borrowed heavily from the disciplines of computer graphics and computer vision in order to implement the ideas.
Audience
Children, artists, and human interface designers.
User Scenario
The tools may be used to create traditional style screen based work or a totally new breed, such as a large screen based augmented reality.
Implementation
The project requires paper, some pencils, a scanner, and the custom software package that I have written.
Conclusion
The potential of the computer has barely been tapped, especially in the area of tools for artists. Photoshop and Illustrator just don't cut it.
