Fairy at the Night
So-young Park
Do you believe in fairies?

Description
The Fairy at the Night is a small box that shows us a fairy. When the door is closed and there's no light and no sound, she shows up and dance with music. So it needs room setting for detecting door, light and sound. I made it difficult to run, because I don't want to make people wake from their reverie of fairies. Fairy is not easy to see, she is a very secret creature. If she's easy to see, she isn't a fairy anymore. What is worse, kids will be disappointed about fairy tales and lose their childish innocence. 'Fairy at the Night' is for helping kids keep their innocence and adults awaken the heart of a child.
Personal Statement
I'm very interested in create unique and fantastic world by using technology. I'm trying to use technology for leading people to somewhere they can't go in the real world. In this case, it takes people to the world where fairies exist like 'Peter Pan'. I think, it may be true that fairies are in real world but we can't see. Imagine when you leave your room or sleep, they may come out. Who knows?
Background
If you can dream it, you can do it. - Walt Disney
Audience
Anyone wants to see a fairy. For kids, also for adults who lost their childish innocence.
User Scenario
The user closes the door of the room, turns off the light, makes no sound and should not come to the box too closely. Then, the user will see a dancing fairy's shadow on the wall and hear beautiful sound of music box. But if the user approaches the fairy, opens the door, makes noise nor turns on the light, she will disappear. The user should respect the fairy, then the user can meet her.
Exception : At the Show, it'll just detect light and distance. So the users can see the fairy easily.
Exception : At the Show, it'll just detect light and distance. So the users can see the fairy easily.
Implementation
It's a small black box(16"x16"x16") which looks like nothing special. There are many things in this box such as arduino board, sensors, a motor and a music box with a small fairy. A switch is on the door, photocells are near light bulbs, small condenser microphone is near the box, and IR distance sensor is attached on the box. A DC motor is connected to a music box. For creating a fairy, the motor makes the music box run and LEDs are turned on. Finally, the fairy dance on the music box with its beautiful sound.
Conclusion
For 'Fairy at the Night', input is nothing, no light, no sound and no one. We always think about what the input could be for our user. But I found that nothing could be input in this case. Also I learned that working with shadow is very difficult. Depends on the brightness and angle of the light, the shape and strength of shadow is changed.
