An interactive piece about cause and effect of behavioral choices, the Anti-Smoking Jacket contains a visceral, iconographic "warning system". While wearing the jacket, a smoker can perform the polite act of blowing their cigarette smoke into a "container" at the collar, in order to avoid blowing it in the faces of people around them. But the smoke then filters into a set of see-through lungs at the front of the smoker's jacket, visible to everyone. Over time the lungs, which have an air-filter back, should darken from cigarette smoke.
The Malignant Mole Bikini (shown as a photo) is made from UV sensitive pigment. In the shade, the bikini appears normal. But once exposed to UV light, dark spots similar to moles appear in various places on the bikini.
The Couch Potato Belt (shown in animation form) is a belt that "grows" love handles in relation to how inactive the user is.

Anti-Smoking Jacket
Fiona Carswell
A series of wearable devices, including the Anti-Smoking Jacket, the Malignant Mole Bikini, and the Couch Potato Belt, that remind wearers of the personal health effects of their behavior.

Description
Personal Statement
These projects arose out of my interest in critical design (as defined by RCA London), and reflective design (as defined by Don Norman). I'm been interested in what aspects of objects cause self-reflection and have been exploring temporally-based objects as a means to identify and reflect on the divergent nature of the physical self. For this project, I wanted to create interactive experiences that arose out of behavioral choices, facilitating discussion in a personal, visceral, and reflective way.
Audience
This is a social, performative, and comedic piece. The audience should have a sense of humor and be interested in critical design as a form of design that aims to facilitate discussion rather than to solve problems.
Implementation
plastic, air-filters, thread, cloth, plastic tubing, air-valve
