| DataCity is a prototype of an interactive display system that provides contextual information to users as it travels with them through the New York City skyline. | We propose creating a window display that will directly connect the user with the content they are learning about or looking at. By moving with the user through the environment, the display will allow people to have a dynamic interaction with their surroundings instead of being limited to the current scenarios: a content-laden display with no direct connection to the real world, or a rich environment without contextual information to allow better understanding and exploration.

| Background: | Issue: Currently the infrastructure of modern cities is falling further and further out of sync with the Digital Age. Because of the prevalence of information providers like Internet search engines and museums, a visitor to a museum or person sitting at home using the Internet can often gain a depth and breadth of experience unavailable to them once they leave the virtual or physical structure. For example, a person visiting the Skyscraper museum in Battery Park City has the contextual information of the buildings in front of them while they are near the exhibits, but once they step outside into the real world, that content is lost. While some people are able to maintain some of that context through using wired appliances such as PDAs and Web-capable phones, those users are still a minority because of cost and availability of services.
