| “Silhouettes” is an installation that allows a user to leave their shadow as a tinted silhouette on a screen. Over time, additional shadows accumulate, and intersections of additive color develop where they overlap. |
“Silhouettes” is an interactive installation that collects people's shadows. A user will stand in front of a screen and a tinted silhouette of their body will appear before them like a shadow. When they walk away, their shadow remains persistent.
As more people leave their shadows, the silhouettes overlap to create intersections of additive color. Over time, the screen will portray a richly colored crowd of overlapping color, made up of the outlines of all the people who have stopped in front of the screen.

| Background: | Originally designed for the Tenement Museum of the Lower East Side, Silhouettes is intended to be a simple and light hearted celebration of multiculturalism by making literal the many colors of the people who inhabit New York City. |
| Audience: | Anyone who passes in front of our screen. |
| User Scenario: | A person will see the screen and walk up to it. As they stand there, their shadow will fade up as a color tinted silhouette and then remain persistant on the screen. As others approach the screen, their colored shadows will fall upon the screen as well, overlapping the shadows already there. The shadows will intersect as additive colors, similar to placing a yellow lighting gel over a blue lighting gel to create green. |
| Technical System Description: | We will use a small camera to record the images of passers-by. The camera data will go into a processing application which will allow new images that remain somewhat still to "burn into" the screen as a tinted silouette. This image will be back-projected onto a screen that is facing an area where people will walk by and have room to stand in front of. |
