A projection of quotes from minimilast artists is obscured by the movement of an array of mirrors until a viewer approaches the installation, halting the dynamism of the system and revealing the textual display.
TextEffect is an artistic installation that obscures minimalist quotes by projecting on a moving system of mirrors. Hanging from the ceiling, these mirrors move based upon the vibrations of small dc motors that they are attached to with string. These motors vibrate continuously until a viewer activates an IR sensor which detects the presence of a person below the reflecting mirrors. Thus, with a viewer present to appreciate the artwork's message, the mirrors are made static and the text in the projection becomes clear.

Audience:Our target audience is people interested in rethinking the potentials for minimilast art in the context of new media.
User Scenario:From far away, the user sees a row of projected squares of light bouncing around the wall. When they approach the projection, the motors causing the mirrors to reflect the projection in this manner cease moving. With the mirrors suddenly still, the viewer can appreciate the text that is being projected. This text obscuring / revealing effect may be amplified with some blurring / fragmenting effects in Processing.
Technical System Description:A projector is hung near the ceiling pointed down towards an array of six mirrors. Each of these mirrors is connected to a vibrating motor that shifts the mirror's position slightly in space. This mirror / motor combination will be carefully rigged to the ceiling. The projection consists of a Processing Applet of minimilast text quotes that are blurred and fragmented in response to a proximity sensor.
