window shade that doubles as a light
This prototype was created in response to an assignment to design a light controller or switch. A window shade is a commonly used light controller to adjust the level of sunlight, the ultimate light source. A user can adjust the level of light by pulling on a set of cords to raise or lower the shade. At night, when we most need light, and the shade is down, we’re left with this blank canvas which we’ve transformed into a light source. We’ve embedded electroluminescent panels into the window shade. The user can adjust the light level by pulling another set up cords up and down.

The shade is lined with a series of sleeves that the user can insert different patterns and images into to change the aesthetic of the shade. The back side of the window shade can be lined with flexible solar panels. By day, the shade can collect solar energy that it can use to partially power the light at night.
