Old Map App allows an iPhone user to explore the effects of time on urban geography.
The application displays layers of geo-referenced historical maps overlaid on modern maps. Geo-referencing stretches the old map onto a modern, accurate projection system so that the same two locations can be compared on all maps. Layers can be peeled and adjusted so that it is easy to compare the same geographical region in various time periods. If the user is located with the region of the historical map as indicated by the iPhone's GPS, the user's position will be mapped back-in-time.
Several maps of New York City & Region are included from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. All are high-resolution scans from the Library of Congress in the public domain.
