Developing Assistive Technology: Field Service Learning

Sign Wave is a gestural computer interface designed to serve those whose physical limitations are incompatible with the traditional keyboard-and-mouse setup. Because it uses the Kinect, this is also a very affordable solution when compared to many assistive technology products that are currently on the market.

Originally designed for one patient, whose neurological disorder has left him with very limited motor skills and almost no vision, the challenge was to create something that could give him more autonomy in his life; specifically, the ability to listen to music, navigate the internet, and compose emails. Previously, he has not been able to perform these tasks without the help of an aide.

Sign Wave was created as part of the Assistive Technology class in collaboration with the Occupational Therapy department at Steinhardt.
