Slideshows as a storytelling form have been in existence for centuries, and even predate photography. Traveling performers would present magic lantern shows to towns using painted slides long before the first transparency film. The form has pervaded most of our lives from home slideshows to business. Slideshows can serve as the perfect counterpoint to today’s image glut culture. Images placed in them are usually carefully selected to craft the message of the show. In that craft is a deliberation and slowness sometimes antithetical to fast-paced, throw-in-everything-but-the-kitchen-sink mentality that pervades online photo repositories and it that allows a story to come to the fore. For my thesis I looked at pervading trends on the web as well as in photography, and I found that craft can be an antidote to being inundated by information. I created a mobile application to explore the possibility of creating short slideshows with an emphasis on storytelling and curation.

A life, even a day, ruled by randomness is not possible; the sole idea is terrifying. However, interactions with chance in leisure activities are mostly desirable; “Wanderer” is a mobile application that gives the user directions for a random walk.
Human limitations concerning the understanding of randomness prevent us from behaving randomly or making decisions by chance. Unlike computers, we cannot generate truly random data consciously. In spite of this, inaccuracies or gestures can generate data that is almost unpredictable. The “Browser Randomizer” tracks a browsing experience, retrieving afterwards this data for the next user.
In the same way, individual decisions have direct influence on a collective of people. The ITP class lottery is the system that takes each student’s class wish-list and using randomness and a set of priority rules, returns the final registration list each semester. Misunderstandings and misuse of this program lead to frustration among the students. The “ITP Class Oracle”, is a simulator that aims to clarify the functionality of the original algorithm as well as provides users with the opportunity to interact with the latter several times to understand the role of chance in this process.

Dance is a field that suffers from a lack of a tangible product, which inspired my desire to create \”performance artifacts.\” I define performance artifacts to be the residue of a performance that, as much as possible, mirrors the experience of viewing the performance in space and over time. To achieve this goal, I developed and recorded a short dance piece with two dancers. The dance is rear-projected onto six panels suspended in mid-air at different depths and heights. As the piece progresses, the most recent phrase moves forward in depth on the panels, representing the passage of time spatially. The recordings of the dance were taken at different angles and perspectives to better mirror the different perspectives an audience might have on a performance depending on their seating and focal point. In transferring the performance experience to a place outside of the theater and outside of a single 2-dimensional viewing plane, I hope to better express the experience of viewing a performance, which by nature is an experience of time and of space.

Tweenbots are simple, human-dependent robots that are placed in urban public space. Through instruction sets displayed on flags and signs, Tweenbots communicate an intention or need to the people who encounter them. Fulfillment of this need is dependent on people’s willingness to step outside of habitual actions and engage with a technological object in the city space. The purpose for building Tweenbots is to facilitate an interaction that answers the question, “Can a small robot change how humans engage with the world?” The result is an unfolding story about the relationship between a robot, people and the city.
