The Battle of Hampton Roads, fought on March 8-9, 1862 between the C.S.S. Virginia and the U.S.S. Monitor, was the first clash of ironclad warships in the history of mankind. I have long been fascinated with this engagement because of the hopes each ship carried into it—for the Virginia, that her armored might could overcome the overwhelming numerical superiority of the Union navy and shatter the blockade that was strangling the South, for the Monitor, that her controversial design would prove the genius of her inventor and provide him some measure of redemption for an earlier failure. My project will be a diorama of the two vessels that will invite viewers to use their mobile devices to trigger videos that tell the stories of the two ships and their momentous encounter.
