THE F—CK’D UP DIARY OF A QU—R NI—ER WOMAN offers a poignant, visually arresting
examination of queerness, blackness and the female body inspired by a collection of diary entries written in 2009 by actor/performance artist and collaborator, Tinuade Oyelowo. “To me,” says Kemeya Harper, “the diary entries are a bold, unfiltered and unapologetic commentary on the roles we willingly or unwillingly play as queer women of color, and how fluid identity is… So many of the entries speak to perception and identity—both Tinu’s personal exploration of her own identity as a queer person, as an artist, as a young black woman, and, the weight of external perceptions. Like a thousand silent battles waged daily, implicitly felt and explicitly expressed on the digital pages of her diary.” This three-part installation explores those enduring questions through an assemblage of animation, shadow puppetry and sound.
