Description

As a contemporary artist and designer I want to create meaningful experiences to share my ideas and beliefs with the world. For this project, specifically, I’m eager to share my personal spiritual beliefs because I know there are other people that feel, as I do, a religious sense towards Nature. It’s ubiquitous, the provider of life. I hope we all can learn to acknowledge its power and magic and pay reverence to it. The inspiration for this project comes from my own relationship with Nature, developed in childhood, and also from what I learned about how our ancestors related to Nature and their wisdom as stewards of the Earth.

So for my thesis I created an interactive installation that combines a kinetic sculpture of a tree and the natural sounds of the rainforest. The figure of the tree is like the sculptures in churches and temples; it’s a sculpture that represents sacred beings that people should worship to. The movement of the tree is accompanied by the sounds of the Ecuadorian rainforest, my favorite region of my country Ecuador. The combination of the movement of the tree and the sounds of the rainforest creates an environment of admiration and contemplation.

The mechanical tree and the sound design are brought to life with the presence of the spectators as an analogy to what we know from anthropology and religions, that a belief is stronger when more than one person practices it, it creates community.

Madre is an installation that is made for someone who wants to be in a space with others who want to pay reverence to Nature. A space that represents the way I see and relate with Nature. With this project I want to share an idea of how much your spirituality can grow if you notice how magical and powerful Nature is and maybe find other people who also believe the same so we can start creating a community.
