Planet Maker

Planet Maker is a playful piece that allows the user to sing a cartoon planet into life and then see the rest of the galaxy by physically pushing into the canvas itself.

This project was inspired by myths and stories about the creation of life through song. The intention is that the piece be as fun and delightful as it is straightforward and simple.

The installation consists of a child's artist's easel. An empty planet is displayed on the easel. As the user sings, pitch and volume dictate which objects populate the planet - for instance a tree, a pig, a cherry, or a volcano. The planet and the objects are all hand drawn and reminiscent of a child’s drawings. Every planet is as different as the people that sing or speak into it are different.

An additional interaction is produced when the user pushes down on the very center of the planet. As the canvas stretches, the planet gets smaller in perspective and stars and neighboring planets start to fly in. The rest of the galaxy is revealed.
