Neurhyme

Neurhyme is an adaptive large scale instrument inspired by neural networks.

New Interfaces for Musical Expression

The interactive system perpetuates both individual and cohesive growth. Each neuron, represented by a discrete audio channel, changes in complexity with the frequency of its activation; through additive synthesis and modulation, each oscillator\'s resonance can evolve or devolve. As a system, the instrument learns each neural connection. A neural connection is established when two or more nodes are activated simultaneously. Their relationship is indexed, including hierarchy of strength through the connection\'s distance.

The neural network is visualized through the nervous tissue. The materials (rice paper) used in the design are chosen to represent the fragility of the tissue.
