Time To Rhyme: The CMU Pronouncing Dictionary And You
Friday, April 17
6:30pm – 8pm
Room 50
Session led by ITP adjunct and Something-In-Residence, Allison Parrish
You’ve got a project that deals with English text, and it’s almost done, but there’s something missing: you’d like to know how particular words are pronounced, so you can determine how many syllables there are in a word, or find text that rhymes. But there’s a problem: it’s impossible know how an English word should be pronounced given only its spelling! What to do? Fortunately, there’s the CMU Pronouncing Dictionary—a free, plain-text dictionary that contains computer-readable phonetic information about thousands and thousands of English words. In this workshop, you’ll learn where to find this magical dictionary, how to parse it, and how to use the data contained therein. You’ll learn how to count syllables, search for words according to their phonetic characteristics, and generate rhymes. Code examples given in Python and Javascript.
