Shifting Perspectives: Explorations in the Process of Unframing
The quest for representation of the subjective experience has been central in the history of art. From the linear perspective of the Renaissance to impressionist painting to experimental cinema, artists have sought ways of immersing audiences within mediated experiences of their perceived realities. However, the rectangular framing of mediated spaces has dominated these presentations, becoming the de facto mode through which most electronic media is experienced.

However, for centuries occasional efforts have been made to portray the unframed, multi-point spherical perspectives that humans naturally perceive. In the 21st century, digital communication tools are enabling experimentation with these panoramic perspectives that researchers across disciplines, from Leonardo DaVinci to Buckminster Fuller, have attempted to represent for centuries. This presentation explores the evolution of spherical perspective and its increasingly important role within modern immersive media environments.
