Bicycle Generator

Team BikeJuice (Anh,Andrew,J0sh, Preston) would like to build one, possibly more, to generate power for our laptops, mobile phones, small electical devices and various projects.

Some useful links:
* Homemade AC/DC bike generator

The plans on the inveneo site, which was shown at NextFest charges a gel-cell/ lead-acid battery
which can be used to power DC operated devices. For AC power, an AC inverter can be used as shown
in this link http://www.scienceshareware.com/bicycle-generator-ac-inverter.htm

PARTS NEEDED FOR CONSTRUCTION:
-Bicycle (with gears to make things easier, and large wheels) - Red's Trainer Mike Creamer runs a gym on Houston St and offered a exercise bike and rower for us to use. We will take a look at the equipment this Saturday (Oct 21 around 4:30/5pm) if you are interested.
-Brushless DC Motor or 12V car Alternator
-Bike Stand
-Battery (gel cell/ lead acid) - Would like to use "Barbara", one of the battery packs on floor

NEED HELP WITH:
-Designing/Building a proper circuit that won't maim anyone in the process
-Obtaining necessary parts, which is adds up $$$! - I would really like to reuse existing parts from
old cars, discarded electronics and abandoned bicylces.

So the motor arrived(finally) and we have been discussing what the next step should be. The motor we settled on is a Dayton parallel shaft permanent magnet 90VDC gear-motor. The first implementation hurdle is the high resistance in the gearing. Which may prove to be a problem. Andrew and I spent the afternoon in search of a wheel to drive the motor. We started at ACE on 3rd, then walked down to Canal, where we found a collar with a set screw that we hope can be mounted to a wheel. It is surprising actually how few fixed hub wheels we have found. It may turn out a belt driven system is the best option.
