Recycling At ITP

Hi everyone, Kate and I have been thinking about the recycling issue at ITP. We want to put out some bins and get it going ASAP. Instead of just recycling, it'd be great to think about how we can repurpose those materials. To get things going....

1) Get permission the put the bins on the floor

2) Meet with a group who has saved their plastic and paper bags, containers, etc. for a week and think through the repurposing process. Beyond these being thought of as art materials, it'd be great to make functional objects. Perhaps reusable plastic bags (layer and sew or seam normal ones for continuous use and better looks), reusable coffee cups, notebooks, sketch pads, napkins, containers for electronics, shelves for lockers, laptop carry cases padded with shredded bags, emergency umbrellas, etc.)

3) Set up the bins with great signage and some of our repurposed objects. We may have to clean some of the stuff we collect ourselves.

4) Do a driveby workshop on constructing these objects and ask people for more ideas.

1. so much paper is wasted - people print up stuff and don't pick it up.

I'm not sure why - I think it is partly because they do not know where the print job is going to. I think a simple sign by each printer would clear things up - i.e. I am printer #1 in the ITP Lounge. Also, an IP address above each printer might be helpful - that way when people print wirelessly from laptops, they can double check their preferences...

2. Water cooler cups - people use plastic cups. If we had individual mugs, cups then this would be madly chaotic. However, i think we should encourage the use of mugs and real cups over the use of plastic cups...
