Vermicompost
- Vermicompost can be done indoors.
- wooden or plastic bins can be used
- bins can double as benchs or coffee tables
- 2ftX3ft will handle 6lbs of waste a week.
- Redworms will tolerate temperatures from 50° to 84°F, but 55° to 77°F is ideal.
- Only redworms or "wigglers" (Eisenia foetida)
- feed mainly non-meat organic materials, limit citrus and dairy especially at beginning.
- take 6 weeks for casting (compost) to appear.
- can be used immediately or stored for later.
What needs to be done?
- Determine size of bin and number of worms
- find out how much organic waste ITP produces in a week
- Determine location for bin(s)
- Funding for purchase of worms, container, and bedding
- Educate floor on what is compost friendly
- Plan for containmentated compost
- Compost usage
- plant soil
- compost tea (added to water so more nutrient for plants)
- storage of unused compost.
