Vermicompost

  • Vermicompost can be done indoors.
  • wooden or plastic bins can be used
    • bins can double as benchs or coffee tables
  • 2ftX3ft will handle 6lbs of waste a week.
  • Redworms will tolerate temperatures from 50° to 84°F, but 55° to 77°F is ideal.
  • Only redworms or "wigglers" (Eisenia foetida)
  • feed mainly non-meat organic materials, limit citrus and dairy especially at beginning.
  • take 6 weeks for casting (compost) to appear.
    • can be used immediately or stored for later.

What needs to be done?

  • Determine size of bin and number of worms
    • find out how much organic waste ITP produces in a week
  • Determine location for bin(s)
  • Funding for purchase of worms, container, and bedding
  • Educate floor on what is compost friendly
    • Plan for containmentated compost
  • Compost usage
    • plant soil
    • compost tea (added to water so more nutrient for plants)
    • storage of unused compost.
