Notes - 12/1/06 - Please add / modify as needed
Don't need it, Don't want it, Don't trash it
MESSAGING
- This is more of a gifting opportunity
- Emphasize Sorting, Harvesting, Donating over trashing & recycling
- Our motives are:
- Engendering Community solutions for dealing with waste
- Converting trash into resources
- Event-based solution for dealing with waste
PRE-SHOW
1. Create Criteria For Separation - What you need, What you don't:
- Materials - Wood, Metal, Plastic
- Electronics - Motors, Boards, Components, Sensors
- Everything else (what fits into this?)
2. Find out what bins there are (if any) for separating out components
- Contact NYU-Recycling about this
3. Reach out to Community pre-show
- Press Materials
- Faculty
- Students - talk to students in class
- Before the show, we will have a pre-purging
4. Create Labels / Posters for Bins
- Large Graphics, easy to glance at
- Perhaps even take sample components/materials, attach them to cardboard, and place them by the appropriate bins. Wallah!
DURING POST-SHOW
Sort - Document - Weigh - Measure
- Possible Time Lapse by Keith Conway?
Sort
- 3 Volunteers for sorting
- Managers keep materials from being mixed up, sorters sort
During the show, there are typically 4-5 bins. How many more will we need for sorting?
1? 2? 3?
POST-SHOW
Possible oulets for materials/waste:
- 1. In-house - use shop cleanup time slot to sort out materials
- 2. Per Scholas - negotiate with Angel for rates (leverage the fact that more donations will come)
- Ask Per Scholas where our stuff went, where it was donated
EVENT
I didn't really take too many notes on what still needs to happen on this.
Contact Jeff? Giana?
We do have a document we put together last Sunday, 11/26
FUTURE RECOMMENDATION\\
While we didn't discuss this during the meeting, I came up with these while recapping:
When students enter their projects into the database, we should encourage them to think about how their projects will break down.
We can do this by having a field asking, "Are any pieces of your project reusable, recylable, or hazardous?"
Grants for Design Challenge Forum
- grant money goes to doling out prizes, organizing event, paying for recycling of "waste" materials
