Making Pop-Up Books
Instructor: Marianne R.Petit
This two-point workshop covers the basics of paper engineering techniques (including folds, layers, dials and pull-tabs) to make movable designs that can be incorporated into your work. Weekly assignments and a final project. This course will meet for the first seven weeks of the semester.
Grading is based on successful completion of all weekly assignments, class webjournals, class participation and attendance.
Students should bring to each class the following: paper, scissors, x-acto knife, ruler, bone folder, glue stick, cutting mat

- Discussion/Demonstration:
- Single Folds
- Triangles
- Boxes / Parallel Folds (Equal & Unequal)
- Box supports, Cutaways, Crossovers
- Assymetrical Angles & Tilted Boxes
- Shaped Boxes
- Layers
- In class: putting it all together
- Assignment:
- Make a 2-3 page book that utilizes and combines the techniques demonstrated in class
- Email me blog url before class
Week 2
- Review / Critique of Assignment

- Origami and Kirigami techniques
- The Accordion

- Make a 2-4 page book that utilizes and builds upon the techniques demonstrated in class
Week 3

- Discussion: Final Project Ideas
- Assignment:
- Select a commercially available pop-up book. Analyze the book on a page by page basis -- what mechanisms and techniques are being used? How are they being combined? Write evaluation to your site. Bring books to class on 3/7 and be prepared to discuss and present.
- Also, begin planning your final project. Post storyboard, sketches, and preliminary construction. Be prepared to present in class.
- Continue work on Final Book Project
