| An exploration of a rich linear narrative, in the form of an animation, using non-verbal communications. |
Can a rich story be told without dialogues?
I’m interested in creating an animation using body language, sound, and color. |
| |
| Personal Statement: | Tired of making “Saturday morning” style animations
Inspired by Miyazaki and Anno
Have believable characters
Not so perfect characters
Evolve
Put myself into the animation
Using Helmet Guy because after ITP I wish to go public with him
Has become what I’m known for at ITP |
| Context: | Miyazaki - Able to create a rich animation with good character development and story
Hideaki Anno - Uses animation as a form of self-expression
Lotte Reiniger - Prince Achmed
Uses gestures and body language to communicate the story
Shadow puppets
Other forms of puppetry
Yuri Norstein
Dance
Ballet - A form of visual performance that doesn’t use dialogues
Hawaii hula dance - Different hand gestures mean different words
Misc.
Sign languages
Cell phone calls
What Dreams May Come - Successful in using colors to express one’s thoughts/feelings/emotions
Good storytelling |
| Audience: | Anyone interested in animation thats driven by the rich story
Anyone interested in animation
Anyone interested in Helmet Guy |
| Methodology: | 15 minute animation
1) storyboard idea
2) draw everything (characters, backgrounds, objects)
3) scan images
4) add color using photoshop
5) animate using after effects
6) edit and add sound in final cut pro
Do studies of body language |
| Conclusions: | It\'s definitely difficult to tell a story without dialogues but not impossible
Next step will be to create similar animations for other Helmet Guys |
